    Please be considerate of local...

by llprice Written Aug 25, 2002

    1.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Please be considerate of local landowners while hunting or bird watching. They rarely receive direct benefit from tourism, but often experience the problems. Help Kearney make your visit pleasant for everyone.

Always ask for the landowner's permission before driving or walking onto private property. Pack away your own trash, and close any gates you have opened.

    Bird watchers:

The Visitors Bureau is always please to send information at your request so that you can plan a rewarding trip. A number of public viewing areas have been established at the best birdwatching locations. Please avoid parking on rural roads or obstructing local traffic.

Stay inside your car while taking photos or view cranes in the field. Cranes are extremely shy and unwilling to allow you to approach. If they hear or see your car door open, you may find yourself staring at an empty pasture, while other birders are glaring at YOU.

    REUNIONS ARE HELD HERE

    by Rich62 Written May 29, 2005
    A REUNION AT HARMON PARK

Harmon Park, in the middle of Kearney, Nebraska, is where many people gather for reunions of all kinds; family reunions, workplace reunions, and so on. The picture happens to be a reunion of teachers who taught at Kearney Junior High School years ago.

You can find Harmon Park at the corner of 29th Street and 5th Avenue.

    by Rich62 Updated Jul 26, 2007
    CORVETTES AT THE ARCHWAY MONUMENT

If you are in Kearney on Father's Day and you like shiny new and old Corvettes, the Archway is the place to be. The Archway Corvette Club has a nice show outside, and in the lobby area of the Arch you can cool off with ice cream sundaes and soda pop.

note: In 2007 theshow was planned for August 11th (a Saturday)

    PATRIOTISM AND FAITH

    by Rich62 Updated Aug 26, 2005
    AN EXPRESSION OF PATRIOTISM
    4 more images

Nebraskans tend to be a very patriotic people, and the folks in Kearney are no exception. They strongly support American soldiers as they serve our country. A large and very permanent display is being erected on the side of a local business and you can see part of it in my photograph. Way up at the top of the ladder you can see John, an 80-something World War II vet, as he constructs this monument.

As you come north through Kearney from exit #272 on the Interstate, you will see this between 21st and 22nd streets on the east side of the road.

THEY HAVE LOTS OF CONVENTIONS HERE

    by Rich62 Written Mar 28, 2006
    A CONVENTION AT THE FAIRGROUNDS
    2 more images

KEARNEY IS THE CONVENTION CAPITAL OF OUT-STATE NEBRASKA, so there's something going on every week. "Out-State" means anywhere other than Lincoln or Omaha. (In New York you say "upstate", here you say "outstate".

Many conventions are at the University of Nebraska at Kearney. Others are in the Ramada, the Holiday Inn, or other motels. Still others are at the Buffalo County Fairgrounds, such as the one pictured here. The pictures are of a convention for restaurant owners and others who are in the food business. It draws folks from Colorado, Kansas and probably a few other states.

    GARAGE SALES!

    by Rich62 Written Apr 22, 2006
BUYERS LINED UP 15 MINUTES BEFORE THE SALE STARTS!
    4 more images

IN SOME AREAS THEY ARE CALLED "YARD SALES" but we call them "garage sales" and boy, are they popular around here.

On Saturday mornings in the spring and summer there are garage sales all over town, and plenty of customers come to browse and buy! Usually the sales start at 8 in the morning, some start at 9. A few will have sale hours on Friday as well as Saturday, but Saturday is the big day.

Here are photos of a garage sale we had on April 22, 2006. You can tell that there was plenty of interest and yes, it was a successful day for us.

    LOCAL TALK RADIO

    by Rich62 Updated Jun 23, 2012
    THE STATION ON CENTRAL AVENUE
    2 more images

TO GET A FLAVOR OF LOCAL POLITICS AND OTHER INTERESTS, tune into AM 1340 radio in the mornings. First, from 7 to 9 am is a lighthearted chatter show called "The Breakfast Flakes". From 9 to 11 am is the call-in portion of the programming. Its called "Talk of the Town".

After that they go to national programs which I never listen to.

The second photo will show a couple of the on-air guys (Dirk and Allen) manning the KGFW booth at the Home, Lawn and Garden Show in Kearney, a yearly event. Since the photo, Dirk has moved on to radio station KRVN in Lexington (880 AM)

I might be wrong, but I think the KGFW building used to be the location of the Solomon Butcher photographic studios. Butcher is widely regarded as one of the premier photographers of pioneers as they settled throughout Nebraska.

THE FOURTH OF JULY.....ON THE THIRD OF JULY?

    by Rich62 Written Nov 30, 2004
    4 more images

Kearney celebrates the Fourth on the third. (What did he say?) Well, the city fires off its big fireworks display on the 3rd. Thats so that people who are travelling to be with family on the 4th can still see the fireworks. Also, if it rains on the evening of the third, we can still do fireworks on the 4th. It just seems to work out well.
