Don't insult Nebraska Football. These people are obsessed. Yes, Omaha is famous for steak, but as a vegetarian, I can't make any recommendations, and there is much more here than steak. Omaha also have a large latin/mexican population, especially in the southern parts of the city, so if you speak spanish, you will definitely have an opportunity to use it.
People in Nebraska have a hideous distaste for Iowa, especially Council Bluffs, and will call it names like 'Counciltucky' (they also have something against Kentucky). To an Omaha, IOWA is an acronym for 'Idiots Out Wandering Around', or 'In Omaha Without Approval'. Aside from the agricultural odor (which is NOT present in Council Bluffs), I, personally, can find nothing wrong with Iowa, so I do not understand this bias.
Nebraska is somewhat conservative, but Omaha is much more liberal, and in some regards progressive. You will meet a wide array of people, so it is best to come without biases and prejudices. Leave a Comment

People in Omaha walk around in a persistant state of depression. Really, the only thing people talk in this town is the weather and how many buildings they boarded-up today!!

Husker Fans: beware insulting them.
Omaha has just as many Husker fans as Lincoln. You do not attempt to be jovial on a Saturday they have lost. The best time to do any sort of grocery shopping on a Saturday, is during the game, not before or after. If you want to blend in, wear red at all times. Leave a Comment

1. Husker football is life here. When the Huskers lose, the city is basically in shut-down mode. Never talk bad about the team. Wear red on game days if you want to blend in. The way people follow the Huskers is kind of sickening sometimes. Oh yeah, and if you really want to get a local fired up, ask about Frank Solich and Steve Pedersen... that should get them talking! ;)
2. Warren Buffett is the number one celebrity here. Tom Osborne was a close second, but since he stepped down from coaching football, you don't here about him as much these days. Sometimes you'll also hear filmmaker Alexander Payne, singer Conor Oberst, band 311, and actor Chris Klein as famous Omaha natives currently and Gerald Ford, Fred Astaire, Marlon Brando and Henry Fonda as famous natives past.
3. People will love to talk up about how great Omaha is or how much it is growing. Omaha is growing, but not nearly at the same rate as other places. It's also not as great as people make it out to be. Just take it with a grain of salt, nood your head and move on.
4. Omaha is big on when a new chain restaurant comes to the city. It'll make front pages.
5. A lot of people are related somehow to Creighton University.
6. Dana Altman, coach of Creighton Basketball, is like god here.

Omaha has a very large eastern european population because of the czechs and poles going there too meat pack in late 1800's and early 1900's.
They make a lot of Kolache desserts in Omaha, these are basically like creme-filled danishes, they are delicious and very high on fat....
Oh, having what is rumored too be the 3rd largest danish population in the nation, Omaha also makes alot of danish and german pastrys all over town

After shopping at Wildoats for the food for the few days I am here, I have lunch there as well from their deli, you can choose between american food or asian food as well as some good cheeses. Sparkling water. organic fruit and vegetables
