Omaha is as safe as any other city in The Untited States with 800,000 people. In fact it is more safe then most. And despite what you may have read here, Omaha has a lower crime rate then Denver and a Murder rate half that of sainted Columbus Ohio ( now I have never been to columbus it may be a fine place, I am sure it is.) The worst neighborhoods in Omaha border downtown especially to the North where apathy and Creighton university has caused some areas of homelessness and crime. But the city is by an large very safe. the city gets more prosperous as you go west but as for "everything" east of 72nd being boarded up... That is Bull S#$T Now as far as politics in omaha goes... Come to the zoo, come see the CWS I think you will find most of what's written by the people here to be quite an exaggeration. Leave a Comment

Like any fairly large city, Omaha has it's pockets of trouble zones. The Plaza and Fountain area is very pretty by day, but at night you may want to be careful. I've seen a lot of homeless and shifty-looking people start hanging out around sundown. At least in my experience, the Old Market is pretty safe, as there is plenty of activity on most nights in the summer. Police presence is pretty good too. AVOID: parts of North Omaha. That gets pretty rough. There are a few areas that were under construction a couple of years ago near the downtown that I felt a bit uneasy in. I doubt I'd walk around there, especially at night since it is not very well-lit and mostly deserted. But there's nothing to see there anyway. That's just asking for trouble. Certain parts off of the freeways are a bit seedy looking too. I personally would avoid the cheap hotels near the border and river in Council Bluffs. They don't look very safe and seem "too cheap" if you catch my drift. (More of a gut feeling than direct knowledge on my part.) As a general rule, if you feel uneasy, trust your instincts and you should have a fun and enjoyable stay in Omaha. Leave a Comment

The greyhound station is at 1601 Jackson...and the lay-overs are long in Omaha..so anywhere from 16th to the 480 expressway at 27th is high crime and from ames to leavenworth is a high crime area as well Jones street from the 1900 block to the 2400 block is very bad, dont walk there or drive through take leavenworth street which has police monitering it 24hrs a day Leave a Comment

Omaha...where do I begin...how about here. If you can't handle Omaha, you can't handle any city. Omaha is like a Big Little City. Yes, it's going through major changes, especially the past 7 years, but it is not scary. And honestly The Old Market is more safe than anything from 24th street through 90th. If you are friendly, Omahans will be friendly. Believe me, I'm from Louisiana, one of the most hospitable states around and Omaha is not hospitable, but it's nothing that should affect you. But don't bash the Huskers, those crazy Husker fans are die hard get in a fight with anyone who says different. If you are not vulnerable, then the "Big, Old, Mean City" won't eat you up...come on, this is going to be one of the biggest tourist area within the next 5 years, so get ready! Drive carefully. I-80 IS SCARY AND DAUNTING for people who are not used to 10 LANE HIGHWAYS. Often called the 'Omaha Autobahn', people also drive very quickly. Watch out for strange traffic conventions, especially on Dodge and Farnam streets, where the flow of traffic changes during the time of day. (Look above your lane, if there is a big red X above you, prepare for a head-on collision). Also look for the 'No Right Turn' signs that will light up at certain intersections. They are there for a reason. Be careful where you park downtown. Omaha is a rather safe city, but crime does happen. If you don't look like a target, you should be safe, but people around here often forget minor details due to the typically low crime, and wind up with their vehicle stolen because they left it running, with the door wide open at Christmas time, at a gas station, in the ghetto with a trunk full of christmas presents with beaming Sony logos. (granted, if they were cheap presents, they probably would still have their car). In general the crime here is much like the rest of the world was in about 1958. Leave a Comment

As to what my Iowan friends and family told me Omaha must be very dangerous with a lot of gangs. I´ve got the slight idea that they might have exagerated a bit, never having lived in a big city ;-) However, once my friend and I parked our rental car at daytime at Crossroads mall, and when we got back someone had broken into the car! Nothing got stolen though, maybe the guy got disturbed by a police patrol... Leave a Comment

Driving in Omaha- Nebraska drivers pretty much don't know how to drive. However, the ones you need to watch out for are the Iowa drivers from next door. They're the crazy ones. Also, remember no left turns off Dodge while you're driving through the first part of Town. Other than all the construction on 72nd, it's pretty easy to find your way around. Leave a Comment

The other night 6 people got shot at an apartment complex called "Wintergreen". It is not uncommon for multiple people to get shot in a night. I have lived in Denver and Columbus, Ohio (lower crime cities ) and Omaha is very violent !!! Dont go east of 72nd street after DARK!!! Leave a Comment

Beware of North Omaha, East Omaha and South Omaha. Stay between 'L' Street and Maple, and 72nd on west. Leave a Comment

OMAHA is not a tourist place at all. Greyhound has a wait in Omaha of around an hour. The area to the west of the greyhound station is dangerous at night, especially east of 20th. The areas South and North of Greyhound have nothing (except for Wal-Greens 4 blocks north of greyhound). The area to the east has a few shops but thats about it. Leave a Comment Phone: 911
