What makes the area so beautiful, and so worth being there, is the gorgeous Sierra Nevada mountains. One definately has to hike around the mountains. There are thousands of trails to walk along. Also, during the winter, some of the best ski resorts are along the Sierra Nevadas near Gardnerville. Lake Tahoe is only about a 20 minute drive away. Also, the Sierra Nevadas create cloud formations that only appear there and some place in Argentina. The skies over Gardnerville are gorgeous.

My wife is Basque from her Father's side of the family so we love to eat Basque. She can even speak Basque, but that is another story.
There are lots of Basque restaurants in Northern Nevada, and we have tried most of them.
JT Bar is, without a doubt, the best of them.
Her parents live in Carson City, which is about 20 minutes north of Gardnerville, so we eat at JT at least once a year when we visit.
Basque eating is done family style and there are basically a few long tables here, with everyone eating together.
When you walk in, there is a bar to your right, and the restaurant part is towards the rear.
There are a few choices for a main dish, with lamb chops always being available. Some of the other things we have seen are chicken, steak, rabbit, sweetbreads, and fish.
You also get a lot of side dishes, including soup, salad, fries, beans, and bread.
You will not leave here hungry!
The red table wine is a perfect beverage choice, or go with the Picon Punch for a real Basque drink.
The staff is always quick and professional.
The owner is usually around and will chat you up at your table.
JT Bar is open for lunch and dinner, but arrive early, as it is a very popular place that gets crowded no matter what day of the week it is.
Favorite Dish: Lamb chops loaded with garlic.
Comes with salad, soup, beans, fries, and bread.
The red table wine is awesome!
There is ice cream and coffee for dessert and is included in the price.

Nelson's offers a nice selection of dishes. They specialize in breads and coffees. They also offer live music. It's a small little place, and they're often in demand, so you might want to make reservations.

I had never been to a Basque restaurant before so I have no idea if this is good Basque food or bad Basque food. I can, however, tell you that in general this food is great. You won't leave this place hungry. The restaurant is situated off of highway 395 next to the Carson Valley Country Club on a unsuspecting road. If you don't know that this place is here you'll unlikely stumble upon it.
Favorite Dish: The menu is simple and has some very tasty dishes. My favorites are the steak and the lamb. With every dinner you get a salad, side dish of the day (try to go on stew day for a real treat), beans, French bread and table wine. Desert is extra but chances are that you won't have room.

A short drive south, down I-88 leads one to Hope Valley, CA. Hope Valley is just a magnificently beautiful area. It's great to hike in the Spring and Summer, and it's great to snowshoe in the Winter. If you get the chance, take a trip down to Hope Valley.
