Luxor: Experience the Luxor inside...
  • Tip Rating:
  • Experience the Luxor inside and out. This is the 4th largest pyramid in the world! When it first opened in 1993, it was introduced as the ultimate in-your-face Las Vegas Casino. This forbidding pyramid of black glass and its colossal Sphinx stood guard not only to this casino but to the entire city. It dominated the southern approach to the Strip. Today, Mandalay Bay has been built next door and overshadows it.
The pyramid itself is 350 feet high. In 1997, two huge step-pyramids were built on either side bringing the total rooms here to a staggering 4427. The Sphinx has also obviously had a face lift, if you look carefully at the two postcards (above and below). As the pyramid is hollow, you are in the world's largest atrium, which takes up 29 million cubic feet. If you stay here, you ride up to your room in elevators (known as inclinators) that follow a 39 degree slope. Accommodation here is very affordable, although more than at Excalibur. I believe I spent about $50 per night. As a guest, you'll have access to the attractively landscaped swimming pool around back.
The Pharoah's Feast Buffet is very good. It is located downstairs, under the casino.

Luxor: See the Luxor! The inside of...
  • Tip Rating:
  • See the Luxor! The inside of the pyramid is every bit as dramatic as the outside. To reach the casino you pass through a reconstruction of the temple of Abu Simbel, guarded by two huge seated statues. Luxor employees in gold Egyptian costumes patrol the area and pose for souvenir photos. Around the perimeter you'll find some great ornamental decorations, statues, and hieroglyphic inscriptions. Also, look out for the bare-breasted maidens outside the Ra nightclub.
The most powerful artificial light ever created shines into the sky from the peak. It's said that it can be seen by planes circling over LA, 250 miles away. It's barely noticable though in the general neon glare of the Strip.

  • Tip Rating:
  • ..... take a closer look at ancient Egypt. The LUXOR has become one of the landmarks of Las Vegas. At night, the laser beam from its top reaches far up into the sky.
The rooms inside are different, too. The pyramid is hollow, so the rooms sort of hang from the walls - no idea how they did that. And the elevators canīt go straight up, of course, so they are 'inclinators'.

A bit of a shock is the fact that in order to fill the interior of the pyramid, they built a cardboard Manhattan..... :-(

Luxor: Go see the 'Blue Man Show'

  • Go see the 'Blue Man Show'

One of the funniest shows I've seen, follow the hapless fools as the Aliens (or whatever they are) experience life on this planet. Musical accompaniment is superb. Audience participation and very very entertaining.

For dinner a very good option is the Luxor Hotel at the one end of the strip. Itīs got an all-you-can-eat buffet for about 13$ with a great choice of delicious meals from starters to really good salads, meat, vegetables to ceakes and cookies. It really is worth the money.

Luxor: Wrap yourself in toilet paper
I saw Blue Man Group at Luxor in Vegas. It's only so so. The best part is music, which is NOT made from PVC pipes as many think, but performed by a regular band. Besides music, the show prides itself in getting the audience involved. But I think it's nonsense. For example, before the show begins, the staff distributes rolls and rolls of toilet paper and encourages the audience to "decorate themselves". Haha those who watch the whole show with toilet paper hanging from their head must feel stupid afterwards.

    Luxor: Too much caption
Since the Blue Men don't speak, they rely on caption to "speak to" the audience a lot, as shown in photo. It's a waste of my time, and hard to read for those who sit in the back rows. If I want to read smart comments I'll just read New Yorker magazine or write some myself like I do everyday on VT.

Again I enjoy the music the most (I hope there's more), and the strobe light effect is cool. Part of the show felt like Pink Floyd concert (although BMG refers to Jefferson Airplane in the end). BMG is the kind of show you only see once if you are curious at the first place.
