Completed in 1989, the Mirage was the first new hotel built on the Strip since 1973. The owner decided against neon in favor of plating the entire front with 24-carat gold stripes. The construction cost of $620 million was a risky gamble even by Las Vegas standards. In order to pay its way, the Mirage would need to make a clear $1 million profit DAILY from its gaming tables. The fact that it succeeded transformed the city. The Mirage has a tropical theme, complete with an erupting volcano out front. It erupts with cascades of water and flame every 15 minutes at night until midnight. When you walk into this hotel, you enter into a luxurious domed atrium with lush gardens. A massive thatched roof shelters the hotel's registration area. There's also a huge fish tank with small sharks and stingrays. The hotel is also famous for the Siegfried and Roy Show. These illusionists have white tigers which you can see for free behind a glassed-in environment when they aren't performing. The Siegfried and Roy Magic Show is one of the most popular in town. Tickets are around $90. (702)792-7777. This photo-postcard was sent to me by a friend and she labeled the room where she had stayed in. :-) To the right side of the pic is part of the volcano Leave a Comment

The Mirage has several visit worthy live animal attractions. In addition to the white tigers and the secret garden of Seigfried and Roy, the Mirage also has the dolphin habitat. The dolphins are kept in a large (2.5 million gallon/9.5 million liter) saltwater tank. Like the Secret Garden, the attraction charges a fee. Leave a Comment

Visit the Mirage. In the lobby you can see the white tigers of Sigfried and Roy behind huge glas windows. In a pool they have dolphins. But the biggest attraction is the artificial volcano in front of the hotel directly at the strip. At night every 15 minutes this mountain erupts. This photo on the left was taken with the volcano in the background on New Yearīs Eve. Leave a Comment

Check out all the casinoes. It's not enough to cruise the streets. Each casino is different and if you don't checkout the interior, you're apt to miss some things.
