The best thing about Mccarran airport is that its only one mile from the south end of the Las Vegas strip, meaning once you arrive & collect your baggage you only have a short trip to your hotel & even if your staying elsewhere such as Downtown its still only a relatively short journey, whichever mode of transport you choose. Not surprisingly Mccarran is a very busy airport, simply because Vegas is a 24 hour town, with planes arriving & departing continuously around the clock. Inevitably there are slot machines scattered around the airport where you can gamble as soon as you arrive,or while your waiting to leave, if you have any money left from your stay. Security is very tight as you would expect & hope for in these days of terrorist fanatics, so expect quite a long wait as you go through the screening processes, & be sure to have a clean pair of socks on for when you have to remove your shoes..lol. Unlike most big airports around the world there are no hotels on the airport grounds, simply because there are so many within a short distance that they are not needed. There are 2 terminals, with a free shuttle bus departing every 12-15 minutes connecting 1 and 2 terminals. Lots of shops are here including toy , sweet , clothes , gift , jewelers, newsagents and bookshops as well as a bank, post office, atm machines and bureau de change facilities & of course quite a few restaurants & snack bars. As you leave the airport you will find all modes of transport available along the street including taxis, limos & shuttle buses as well as cat , the local bus service. A Brief History. When Amelia Earhart 1st landed her plane in Las Vegas in 1923 aviation history was initiated in this small unknown gaming town. But it wasn't until 1932 when Patrick a Mccarran was named to the U.S senate that the idea of an independent aviation authority began to take shape. By 1950 Mccarran field was serving 16 flights a day & in 1968 Mccarran airport was officially renamed Mccarran international airport.
