Here we are loading onto this 20 passenger plane for our 30 minute ride over Hoover Dam to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. The airport at the Canyon is a dirt strip on a working cattle ranch where you spend about 6 hours touring the ranch and having lunch after traveling by van or ATV to the Canyon edge for views from the North Rim. Lots of fun and great help from the people working at the ranch.
When you plan to go to Las Vegas, also plan to side trip to the Grand Canyon. You are already close to the most beautiful rock formation on earth anyway.
Make sure to spend the night over there if you don't feel like driving back to Las Vegas. And, experience the most spectacular sun rise! As if the whole canyon is on fire!
Bring a jacket no matter what because it gets really cold in the morning at the Grand Canyon.
The entrance fee is $25.00 and the pass is good for seven days. The skywalk fee is different because this is maintained by the local Indian community.
The Grand Canyon is a bit of a must see if you want some natural beauty after the bright lights of Vegas. We took a plane to the canyon, a helicopter down into it, a boat along the Colorado river and then a coach to a viewpoint where we ate lunch hosted by native americans over looking the splendour of the canyon. If you want to know more check out my Grand Canyon tips page!
Having visited the Grand Canyon on my drive to Las Vegas, I wholeheartedly recommend that if you have any time at all, you should see it!
If time is a premium, worry not as (as of 9th Dec '03) a 3.5hr overflight of the Grand Canyon by plane costs as little as $99!
Otherwise, there are dozens of tours that go there ranging from luxury buses to Humvees and Helicopters - the choice is yours! Check the website link below for more info...
It would be a shame to come all this way to Las Vegas and not go the extra mile(s) to visit one of the world's greatest wonders!

Helicopter tours are very expensive way to go around tour areas and going to the grand canyon via a helicopter tour can really be very expensive with prices ranging from $ 400 per person up to $ 750 per person depending on the type of tour and the time of the helicopter tour you want. A simple las vegas to grand canyon west rim tour with lunch at the bottom of the grand canyon with hualapai indians will cost $ 450 but with landing at the colorado river with white river rafting will cost $ 600 and if you add a las vegas flyover with limousine service tranfers to and from your hotel will cost $ 425 (exluding other fees like fuel surcharges). Tour can be half day or whole day too. The Grand Canyon is a very colorful, steep-sided gorge, carved by the Colorado River in the U.S. state of Arizona. It is largely contained within the Grand Canyon National Park — one of the first national parks in the United States. President Theodore Roosevelt was a major proponent of conservation of the Grand Canyon area, and visited on numerous occasions to hunt and enjoy the scenery. The canyon, created by the Colorado River over about 6 million years, is 277 miles (446 km) long, ranges in width from 4 to 18 miles (6.4 to 24 kilometers), and attains a depth of more than a mile (1.6 km).
I booked a tour online and they picked us up early in the morning. We went there by bus and it takes quite a while to get there, passing by the Hoover Dam. The sights over at the Grand Canyon are spectacular and if your budget allows, take the helicopter ride. The views you get cannot be paralleled by those on the ground and you get the thrill of a helicopter ride. I was lucky enough to get in on the co-pilot's seat. However, I wouldn't recommend it to those with a severe fear of heights. I have a mild fear and i was holding on to the camera with one hand and gripping tightly on to the edge of my seat with the other as the heli went over the edge and the land plunged to form the canyon.
It wouldn't do to miss the lookout points on the ground either. The view and feeling that you get is different and the 2 complement each other.
I only had time for a one day trip but for those with more time, I'd recommend staying over at the Grand Canyon. There are several companies online advertise full day trips that start from the Grand Canyon rather than Vegas. These trips include whitewater rafting along the Colorado River and heli rides. Or you can set out on one of the treks along the canyon on your own. Its just too bad I didn't have the time.
I wanted to do something different in Vegas besides the usual gambling, partying, shopping, drinking...etc.. So I called one of those tours companies and booked us on a small plane that took us to the Grand Canyon. I had always wanted to go there but hadnt. We got picked up at our hotel in theearly morning hours and were taken to the airport. From there we hoped on a small aircraft and we were off. In the plane we got headphones so we can hear a narrated story of the Grand Canyon and alittle info on everything we were passing. We got to the Grand Canyon airport and went on by bus to the South Rim. It was a day long excurssion but totally worth the visit. Now I at least know that I would actually do the drive to the Grand Canyon, maybe go for a hike or something. It was totally worth it and I got alittle taste of what to expect.
Grand Canyon National Park is a natural wonder measuring one mile deep and about 280 miles long. The width varies from about one mile wide to about 18 miles wide.
The canyon was carved by the Colorado River, which winds through the canyon bottom. The Colorado drains water from seven states, however the Grand Canyon is entirely in northeastern Arizona. Although several other canyons have been carved along the river, this area is the most spectacular.
Many tours are available to take visitors around the canyon and to the bottom of the canyon. Several companies also offer flights over the canyon.
While you're in Las Vegas you're need to spend one day out to go and visit the Grand Canyon. See my travelogue and pics on the Grand Canyon its amazing.
Completely breathtaking as you fly over. Great way to see the Canyon. Helicopter is the way we went and enjoyed the entire day.
