Hoover Dam/Lake Mead: Its not really that far off...
  • Tip Rating:
  • Its not really that far off the beaten track. the Hoover Dam is well worth seeing as one of the magnificent achievements in engineering. It's hard to believe it was built in the thirties. Unfortuneately i missed the tour, but nonetheless it was impressive just to look at.

Hoover Dam/Lake Mead: Drive out to the Red Rock...
  • Tip Rating:
  • Drive out to the Red Rock Canyon National Park, just a half hour drive west of Las Vegas....

Scientists and geologists believed that about 65 million years ago, a really huge earthquake rumbled under the southern Nevada desert and two of the Earth's plates collided with such great force that part of one plate was shoved up over a much younger sandstone formation. The result is the Keystone Thrust Fault - part of which you can see today at Red Rock Canyon.

Note: For a more detailed look at this spectacular place, please surf straight to my NEVADA travel page for more details and pics....

    Thanks!

  • From Vegas, take a short drive out and view the Hoover Dam. Another cool landmark. Tour this famous dam which holds back the Colorado River. It also happens to be THE source of power supply for Nevada, Southern California and Arizona (yes, the states)!

    Hoover Dam/Lake Mead: Hoover Dam
  • Tip Rating:
  • On the border of Nevada and Arizona, Hoover Dam is situated in Black Canyon on the Colorado River (approximately 30 - 40 minutes southeast of Las Vegas). A major engineering achievement, the massive dam is 221 m (726 ft) high and 379 m (1244 ft) long at the crest .

The reservoir formed behind the dam, Lake Mead, is one of the largest artificially created bodies of water in the world; it covers an area of 603 sq km (233 sq mi), and its shoreline measures 885 km (550 mi).

The hydroelectric generators of Hoover Dam, which are capable of supplying nearly 1.5 million kilowatts of power, provide electricity to Arizona, Nevada, and southern California. Please be warned that security measures are in effect and your vehicle may be searched.

Hoover Dam/Lake Mead: Hoover Dam, also known as...
  • Tip Rating:
  • Hoover Dam, also known as Boulder Dam, is one of the world’s major electrical generation plants.

The dam is a National Historic Landmark and has been rated by the American Society of Civil Engineers as one of America’s Seven Modern Civil Engineering Wonders.

The Visitor Center is open every day of the year except Thanksgiving and Christmas. A 25-minute historic film about the construction of Hoover Dam is shown throughout the day. Guided tours of the dam and the power plant are offered daily.

Taking a tour of the dam is very interesting for kids and adults alike. It is sometimes hard to leave the exitement of Las Vegas for a trip to the dam, but it is well worth it.

Location: Off of Highway 93, 27 miles south east of Las Vegas.

    More Info: Admission Prices: Adults 17 to 61 -$8.00, Adults over 61 -$7.00, Kids 6 to 16 -$2.00, Kids under 6 -free.

  • Tip Rating:
  • While visiting Hoover Dam you may want to stop at nearby Lake Mead. Lake Mead is the 16th largest man-made lake in the world and the largest man-made lake in the Western Hemisphere. It was created by Hoover Dam along the Colorado River. It occupies about 1.5 million acres - twice as much as Rhode Island - and about 820 miles of shoreline. The Lake Mead National Recreation Area (NRA) offers a wealth of things to do and places to go year-round. Its huge lakes cater to boaters, swimmers, sunbathers, and fishermen while its desert rewards hikers, wildlife photographers, and roadside sightseers. It is great fun for kids to take a swim in this beautiful high desert lake. You can relax on the beach while the kids swim. There is even a small Casino nearby if the lure of the slot machines has captured you.

Location: Take U.S. 93 south through Boulder City toward Phoenix, approximately 30 miles.
