    Located only 158 miles from Las Vegas is the beautiful Zion National Park. You could make a day trip out of it, but I would stay overnight in nearby Springdale so that you have enough time to drive the scenic Hwy 9 through the 1 mile tunnel to the eastern section of the park. There are also many excellent hikes, most of them paved and easily accessible for all members of the family. See my Zion pages for more photos and info.

    About 30 minutes south of Vegas, you'll find Buffalo Bill's casino, and therein, the Desperado Roller Coaster.

    When it first opened, the Desperado held the Guiness Book of World Records title as the world's tallest, fastest, and steepest roller coaster. It's since been outdone in all categories, but it's still in the top 10 of steepest! It was so much fun, we rode it twice.

    Also, since you're in Primm, NV and not on the strip, you don't have to wait in line. You get a discount on the NYNY coaster if you keep your ticket stub, but honestly this ride was way more fun.

    The buffet at Buffalo Bill's is not bad either. But definitely wait until AFTER you ride the coaster :)

    Take I-15 south out of Vegas to Primm. You can't miss it!

    Primm, Nv ~ Better known as State Line. Only about 45 minutes west of Vegas. Great stop on the way to Vegas from California to stretch your legs, go on the roller coaster at Buffalo Bill's or get some preemptive gambling in. On the drive back to Cali, procrastinate the drive by stopping to stretch you legs, go on the roller coaster or get some last chance gambling in!

    I was actually amazed to see that there were actually waterfalls in the desert! How could that be?

    My brother-in-law, who lives in Las Vegas (owns businesses there), took us to Black Diamond. He said there are red rocks in the town and it is a great place for hiking. We actually went hiking close to the red rocks and found mini-waterfalls!

    The hike was easy because there are trails to follow, snaking through small bushes.

    The red rocks are amazing.

    The drive was about 45 minutes from the Strip and the hike is about 30 minutes one way.

    • Do take a trip upto the Grand Canyon. You really MUST shop around for the best deal. We booked via the internet in advance and we paid less than half what others paid for the same trip. There are 'Tourist information' shops all over the place, push them for their absolute best price.

    • visit the Grand Canyon, Hoover dam. lots of options available from vegas. Take a helicopter ride if u like or drive down, take a few hours.

    China Ranch is a family owned and operated date ranch only three miles from Tecopa (and the Tecopa Hot Springs), about 1.5 hrs. from Vegas on Hwy 127. It is set in a spectacular desert location, in a green little valley with a stream, and date palms standing out against the sky and hills near the Old Spanish Trail. The ranch has a store which offers all kinds of date-injected goodies. Guided nature walks are a feature of the ranch also. Don't pass up a soak in the mineral baths at Tecopa- it is an experience you'll never forget.

    We rented a car and drove to the Death Valley. That's about 2 1/2 hours from Las Vegas.

    There you can see some amazing landscapes and a lot of rocks. But be careful it can get incredible hot there too.
