    Riding in the Desert

    by percy961 Written Sep 18, 2004
    A couple of Cowboys

We decided to get out of the City and signed up for a horseback ride through the desert. We both learned alot about the desert's wildlife, cacti and history.

We took the Sunset Steak Dinner Ride,
Begin with a relaxing ride around the mountain just before sunset, capturing the long shadows, dramatic colors of the desert and mountains. This 2-hour ride is the best way to experience the flavor of the Old West. As your horse takes you over the crest of the mountain ridge, you will take in the incredible glittering lights of the Las Vegas valley.
Then back to the ranch and a steak dinner beneath the stars.

    Death Valley national monument

Most people won't come to Las Vegas to see the desert, but consider that the amazing sights of Death Valley are only 2.5 hours away! It certainly merits a day trip if you can afford to spare the time, if only to get away from the neons for a while.

Primm, Nv ~ Better known as State Line. Only about 45 minutes west of Vegas. Great stop on the way to Vegas from California to stretch your legs, go on the roller coaster at Buffalo Bill's or get some preemptive gambling in. On the drive back to Cali, procrastinate the drive by stopping to stretch you legs, go on the roller coaster or get some last chance gambling in!

Do take a trip upto the Grand Canyon. You really MUST shop around for the best deal. We booked via the internet in advance and we paid less than half what others paid for the same trip. There are 'Tourist information' shops all over the place, push them for their absolute best price.

If you get tired with the strip, head to downtown Las Vegas to take in the other hotels, such as the four seasons, 4 aces and if you really want to see more of Nevada take a bus or plane ride to Hoover Dam.

    China Ranch Date Palm Farm

    Date palm at the Ranch

China Ranch is a family owned and operated date ranch only three miles from Tecopa (and the Tecopa Hot Springs), about 1.5 hrs. from Vegas on Hwy 127. It is set in a spectacular desert location, in a green little valley with a stream, and date palms standing out against the sky and hills near the Old Spanish Trail. The ranch has a store which offers all kinds of date-injected goodies. Guided nature walks are a feature of the ranch also. Don't pass up a soak in the mineral baths at Tecopa- it is an experience you'll never forget.

We rented a car and drove to the Death Valley. That's about 2 1/2 hours from Las Vegas.

There you can see some amazing landscapes and a lot of rocks. But be careful it can get incredible hot there too.

If you are going from Europe for a break you must visit the Grand Canyon and if possible Monument Valley. The best way is to do a fly tour with a carrier like Scenic Airlines ( Scenic Airlines on your search engine will get you to the site ). They'll pick you up at your hotel take you to the airport and can offer a range of trips ). Plus the Hoover Dam is also worth a visit.

Ah, explore one of the world's greatest wonder - the Grand Canyon. What? No time to see this?? Find the time! Or you'd regret it for sure.

Note: For more pics of the GRAND CANYON, please browse through my NEVADA and ARIZONA pages....

Don't miss the Desperado roller coaster at Buffalo Bill’s. This is the fastest, scarriest, roughest and exciting roller coaster that I have ever been on. I love roller coasters and this is as good as it gets. It begins with a 225-foot drop down a 55-degree descent followed by a 155 foot second hill. This high speed ride keeps you gasping for breath as it careens at speeds up to 80 miles per hour for almost 2 1/2 minutes. If you are in the area it is well worth your time to stop and enjoy this thrilling experience.
Location: Located in Primm, Nevada, roughly 30 minutes from Las Vegas. It is a great place to stop for a break or overnight if you are driving from Las Vegas to Los Angeles.

    More Info: Hours of operation: 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday - Thursday, 11 a.m. to midnight Friday, and 10 a.m. to midnight Saturday.

Cost: $6 (prices increases to $7 June 30-July 4 and Sept. 1-4. Must be 48 inches tall to ride.

    E.T. HIGHWAY.
This is the sign at the start of the famous E.T. Highway where many UFO sightings are reported (apparently Wednesdays are best !!!). Follow this & you eventually come to a mailbox, on a fork in the road in the middle of the desert, this is the turnoff to the infamous AREA 51, otherwise go straight ahead to the little town of RACHEL.

    AREA 51.
After driving miles & miles down a dusty road, (carefull with the odd pothole, as a breakdown here would be ????) you eventually come to the INFAMOUS AREA 51 WARNING sign, there are hidden cameras watching you all the way & the guards (nicknamed 'Camos')were waiting for us in their truck on top of the hill. Creepy place!!! p.s. do not cross the red posts or you will be shot !!!

by RobMorgan Written Aug 24, 2002

GRAND CANYON. The best way to get to the Canyon from Vegas is with HeliUSA, they are the only company that fly direct, & land on the Canyon floor next to the Colorado River. Where you'll have a picnic & champagne toast. Flying over the rim is a sight you'll never forget, AWESOME. Also a helicopter does not suffer from 'bumps & dips' as an aeroplane does, & gives a smooth ride.
LITTLE BIT FROM MY DIARY-'As we flew over the rim & into the Canyon, Fred, our pilot said 'welcome to the Grand Canyon', we could only gasp & say WOW, we were speechless (which must be a first for Liz!!!). The hair on the back of my nech went up & had a lump in my throat & Liz started crying (girls, eh !!!). We got back to our hotel room later & sat there, still a bit stunned by what we had experienced that day'.
