Todai Restaurant: Buffets and sushi don't mix

This is an above-average affair when it comes to Asian food (mostly Chinese and Japanese). The selection is very impressive with a generous offering of salads (the Chinese chicken salad is particularly good). Follow that up with a variety of Chinese and Japanese courses, with a heavy emphasis on seafood. I'm extremely picky when it comes to sushi because it's only good fresh. I've never eaten at a sushi buffet that I've liked. You really need fresh sashimi to experience excellent sushi. Here, the sushi is prepared in quantity but feels and tastes like rubber. But if you like variety this is a decent place to find that.

The better items are actually in the dessert and other seafood sections. My favorite, baked sea mussel, is something I pick up in troves. The desserts are tiny so you can sample a wide variety.

Favorite Dish: Fried sea mussel. There's mayonaise cream sauce topped with lightly baked crumbs and mixed with peas. Extremely tasty.

I've never come across a wider range of excellent Japanese food than at the Todai Restaurant. Buffet lunch on weekdays is just $15.95. Enjoy the freshest sushi and delicate red bean cake desserts.

Favorite Dish: Crepe with red bean filling. Heavenly. Simple fare at its best.

It's an Asian/seafood buffet. Some things are exquisite -- others less so -- but with careful grazing you can have a delicious meal!

Favorite Dish: I loved the lemon shrimp and the little jellos with different squares of color. [So I'm simple-minded!]

A: West Rim is closer to Las Vegas, but is a huge tourist trap. It isn't actually located inside Grand Canyon National Park. It's a privately run casino / resort type place.
