A geat sight for the eyes...very impressive and enormous. Was about a 45 minute drive outside Vegas proper, easy highways to get there. Go though Boulder City and continue about another 15 minutes. Parking on site $7, $10 for the tour....free to view and walk across otherwise. Plan 1 to 2 hrs for your visit total. Leave a Comment

The dam steep downriver side of the dam from AZ by Ewingjr98, 4 more photos Located in the heart of Lake Meade National Park stands the Hoover Dam, towering 726 feet over the river. When built the dam was the tallest in the world, and is still the largest concrete dam in the Western Hemisphere. Requiring just 5 years for construction, Hoover Dam was completed in 1935 and named after President Hoover. All vehicles approaching the dam from either direction are subject to search. Upon approaching the dam from Vegas, the first parking you will find is a nice, new garage next to the visitors center charging $7 to park. Across the dam in AZ you will find plenty of free parking, all just a short, scenic walk back across the dam to the visitors center. Tours cost $11 for adults, but you can walk across the dam for free...but be careful--pedestrians are not authorized on the dam after dark! Currently you can drive across the dam, but a new bridge is being constructed across the canyon just a 1/4 mile downriver of the dam to ease traffic congestion and reduce the security threat. by SmileyLeSa The Hoover Dam was construced in the 1930s. For its time it was a very advanced structure. I highly recommend the guided tour. Normally, I like to do my own thing, but this tour was both educational and also takes you to areas of the Dam you could not visit on your own. It lasted about 45 minutes and the cost it $11. Leave a Comment Phone: (702) 494-2517Directions: The dam is located 30 miles southeast of Las Vegas on US Highway 93 at the Nevada-Arizona border

Serenity by lmkluque While in Las Vegas take a side trip out to Lake Mead and Hoover Dam. There are camping, boating and picnicing facilities at Lake Mead as well as open areas along the shore to stop for a picnic or a swim. Interesting tours of Hoover Dam are offered and it is possible to walk from the state of Nevada to the state of Arizona along the wall of the dam. Leave a Comment Directions: Southeast of Vegas

A tour is available that will allow you to explore inside the dam. Be sure to take time to visit the museum and nearby exhibits.

The Hoover Dam was built on the time of the big economic crisis, in 1930, but it is still a milestone in the story of the architecture. The dam surpassed all engineering records when the consruction works finished in 1935. This was the so far highest dam, the most expensive and largest hydroelectric plant of all time. Astonishing, but it was finished with two and a half years earlier and from less money, than planned. With the help of the Hoover dam became peopled the southwestern part of America, since was current and water supply already. In several parts of Nevada, Arizona and South California even today this 221 metres high huge construction towering above the black canyon of the Colorado River insures the current and the water. I myself took part in a flight excursion from Las Vegas without landing at Hoover Dam. Look at my transportation tip. The busiest season for visitors is in the summer from Memorial Day until Labor Day. Powerplant Tour Admission Fees: U$11.00, Seniors (62+) U$9.00, Juniors (ages 4-16) U$9.00. Tickets sold until 4:15 p.m. Tours: Summer: first tour at 9:15am; last tour at 5:15pm. Winter: first tour at 9:15am; last tour at 4:15pm Address: Nevada-Arizona border - Lake MeadPhone: (702) 494-2517Directions: 50 km southeast of Las Vegas, follow US 93 (runs across the top of the dam) Parking near Visitor Center: U$7.00 - cash-only!
