The lake by Gerrem Lake Mead, now a major recreation area, was formed by the building of Hoover Dam on the Colorado River. Lake Tahoe and the turquoise-colored Pyramid Lake are northeast. Leave a Comment

by PelLihi Since Las Vegas is pretty lame during the day (except the water park!!) it's better to use the time for short trips. The Hoover Dam is one of the largest dams in the world and it's worth a trip. But bring some water with you, because since you're in the desert it's getting very hot!!! You can also go for a swim in lake Mead afterwards to cool down a bit. Leave a Comment

by UK_GUY_LOVES_VEGAS The Hoover Dam is one of the biggest man made dams in teh world. I'm not sure if you can still take tours of the dam following Sept 11 attacks, but if you can I recommend that you do it. Its is truly an impressive piece of engineering Leave a Comment Directions: about 30mins from Vegas. nr Boulder

The "crooked" towers at Hoover Dam by mwenn2100 We took a half day trip with Vision Holidays to Hoover Dam with a stop at Lake Mead. It was actually pretty cheap, and ended up being a good deal for the price. The tour bus picked us up at our hotel in the morning. The bus driver was hilarious and kept the whole bus laughing and smiling during the trip. I've had some bad tour guides before, but this lady was top notch. She pointed out places of interest to us all along the way. The Hoover Dam was definitely a sight to see. We wandered all over and looked at all of the exhibits. It was scorching that day, but since we only had a couple of hours there it was okay. It was really touching to see the monuments to the men who lost their lives during the construction of the dam. It's unfortunate that they no longer allow visitors into the underground of the dam, but we were able to see some interesting things anyway. The stop at Lake Mead was only for a few minutes. Just enough time for everyone to get off the bus and snap a few shots. It was very pretty though, and I was able to get some pretty great pictures. Leave a Comment

Lake Mead is just a few minutes from Vegas. This is a great place to go for Jet Skiing or Wakeboarding. During the summer months the water is about 80F. But is still seems cool compared to the 120 degree heat outside the water. If you do go out to the lake during the summer, I recommend you put on a lot of sunblock(water proof kind). It's very easy to get sun burned on your neck and shoulders. Below are pictures of my brother and I going out on his friend's boat. The huge Tonka Truck belongs to my brother.
