Ok, as much as I love being able to see animals up close, I hate that I have to see them in such unnatural surroundings. This is why I don't have birds in cages or aquariums. But if this is your thing, then head on over to MGM and see the lions through the glass cage.

MGM Grand Hotel

Easily found because of the giant carved Lion that impressively gaurds the hotel entrance. We went here to see the Lion habitat inside. The MGM Grand Lion Habitat features multilevel areas for the pride lions to play and interact with the public, which is less than 1 1/2 inches away. Open from 11:00am to 11:00pm daily. Admission is free. It is nothing fantastic or that impressive to see, but it is free and you can get your picture taken with the lions for a fee if you want and the kids like it.

The MGM is the biggest hotel on the strip and apparantly the biggest hotel in the world. At over 5000 hotel rooms it is sometimes difficult to find your way around. The hotel is home to a number of attraction such as the lion habitat and club 54 and several theaters playing a revolving door of acts and shows.

Lion sleeping on glass roof in Lion Habitat at MGM

Open 11 am to 10 pm daily, no charge. Would not have wanted to pay for this. This is simply an indoor habitat - looks like a steep rock formation with some foliage. The five lions were pretty sleepy (as lions tend to be) and I felt kind of sorry for them.

If you're around the MGM Grand, you may find a visit to the Lion Habitat right up your street! The lions, which are the desendants of the famous Leo (whose roars have been the mark of MGM films for many years), live and are cared for on a 8.5 acre stretch of land away from the hotel.
The Lion Habitat within the hotel is there for the purpose of education. For people to see these magnificent creatures up close and to learn more about them.

To go and see the lions if free. The habitat is situated by the Rainforest Cafe and Starbucks.

Opening times are 11 am to 7 pm daily.

The MGM Grand is well .. really grand. The hotel has over 5000 rooms and it's the largest hotel in Vegas and apparently the largest hotel in the world, although I don't know if this record still holds, things change quickly in this business. Its casino is also the most spacious in Vegas giving you the feeling of a palace, especially if you crossed the bridge coming from the cramped and cute New York, New York. Many restaurants and some of the best shows in town complete the picture of a huge entertainment resort. This casino's theme is Hollywood's golden age but it's done in a very subdued way for Las Vegas. Most of it is just pictures with movie stars hanging on the walls. As for MGM's freebie, cause every hotel on the Strip needs to have one, it also has to do with movies. You might remember the roaring lion that was the logo of the MGM movie studios. They spun this idea around and came up with a giant bronze statue guarding the entrance to the resort and with the famous "Lion Habitat". Just off the hotel's entrance is a glass enclosure where visitors can admire the king of the animals going about its business. Which means most of the time you'll see the lions sleeping. Sometimes they have trainers inside the cage trying to play with the lions. They will also educate the public in regard to the lion's habits and give information as to how the lions are taken care off. They have over 30 lions that are taken back and forth and rotated between the casino and a ranch near Las Vegas so the lions only get to spend 6 hours a week in the casino. They can see but not hear the viewers.

One of the most popular (and more importantly, FREE) things to do in Vegas is to see the lion enclosure at the MGM Grand Hotel. The lions are inside, right next to the casino, from something like 11am to 11pm.

There are usually two lions in the enclosure at a time and they are rotated every 5 hours or so, for animal welfare. Sometimes there may be keepers who join the lions. It can get quite busy around the enclosure but if you're staying at the MGM its always worth a quick look as you walk past.

I don't know how or why, but there are a couple of lions inside the MSM Resort... somewhere next to their casino, there's a huge showcase where the lions just live their lives in front of hordes of tourists.

The funny thing is that those two lions are quite big lions, but they act like little pussy cats. There are two trainers inside the glass cage making them play with a bunch of balls and laying down next to them, rubbing them like if they were just kitties! The whole thing is beautiful!!

And the cage has glass tunnel, too... so you can go underneath the lions, see when they run above you... it's a very nice experience.
