acrobats at Circus Circus by windsorgirl On our trek down the Strip to the Stratosphere (it's not as close as it looks!) we had to stop in to Circus Circus to cool off and rest a bit. We decided to catch one of the free circus acts that are shown from 11am onward. Ours featured 4 acrobats swinging and tumbling above us while we watched awestruck from beneath their safety net. The performance lasted about 15 minutes and did I mention, it was free. Leave a Comment Address: 2880 S. Kablooey! by soccergrrl Another cool Vegas freebie is the volcano in front of the Mirage Hotel & Casino. It erupts nightly (except in inclement weather -- I love it!), about every 15 minutes (between about 7 and midnight). Be warned that if you are up close to it, the fire effects can feel very hot! Leave a Comment Address: In front of the Mirage Hotel & CasinoDirections: Look for the "volcano" in the water area, covered with tropical plants. (I don't think it looks particularly much like a volcano by day, but I guess that's not the point.)Website: http://www.mirage.com/pages/attrac_volcano.asp

Nascar fans will love this place. Located just inside the Sahrah Hotel, the NASCAR Cafe offers museum quality memorabilia from your favorite drivers. There are two floors of NASCAR gifts, which include jumpsuits, helmets and even the cars themsleves. Checkout the top floor to overlook the fans wandering below. This place also offer great food and drinks from both floors. Check out the video game room too. Cafe Hours: 12 p.m. to 10 p.m. Sahara Hotel and Casino 888-696-2121 Leave a Comment

You can of course pay $100 or more for the big show tickets but if funds are a bit limited you can still enjoy the Vegas experience, and do it a lot cheaper. Take a long evening stroll along the strip from the wonderful Bellagio Fountains, to the erupting volcano at the Mirage (please note the Volcano is closed for renovation until the end of 2008) then the pirate show at Treasure Island (arrive early for a good view). When you are at Treasure Island turn around and you'll get a great view of the Venetian on the other side of the Strip. All these shows are free, you can see them from the strip and they are all on the same side which makes it easier. There is a free masquerade show inside the Rio Casino, you may need to get a taxi although if you have plenty of time the Rio runs a free shuttle to and from Harrah's in the middle of the Strip. The Tropicana has a free circus type show in the casino and also has an interesting gambling museum that is worth a visit. My biggest tip for a free evening show though is to get a bus Downtown to Fremont Street (just get off where the crowds do) for the hourly lightshow. There's a real carnival atmosphere and it really is something not to be missed. There are also smaller, some say friendlier, casinos downtown that have lower table limits if you feel a bit overawed by those on the Strip. Directions: If you are on the Strip and want to get to Fremont St catch the Deuce bus and get off with the crowds.

Splish Splash I Was Taking A Bath... by jag17 While you are waiting for the volcano to erupt at the Mirage, you might as well stick your head in the door and check out the white tigers. Only a few dozen of these white tigers exist in the world. The display is beautiful, and the animals are rotated several times during the day. Check them out as they swim in the pool, play in the fountains, and lounge in the display. WHITE TIGER AT THE MIRAGE ENTRANCE by Koala_D Here's just a few special places: RIO-- Free carnival starting at 3:00. Every hour. Parade hangs from the ceiling on tracks. Free beads... very festive! MIRAGE-- You MUST see the white tigers at the entrance!! TREASURE ISLAND -- The pirate ship battle is a crowd pleaser. Get there early and stand on the raised sidewalk for a good view. MGM Grand-- The lions are fun to watch ... and they are so pampered! They are often asleep on the glass walkway over your head! M&M World-- SEE THE MOVIE!! Luxor-- Wow! Don't miss the talking camels. Statues are very impressive. McDonald's inside- upstairs (surprise). Caesar's-- The Fall of Atlantis is a great show. They also have the moving statues... talking (OK, but not great). The Aquarium is nice. Lots of colorful fish.... worth waiting to see them eat (late afternoon). Flamingo Hilton-- Inner area has penguins and flamingos... nice. Excalibur-- Merlin at night (OK, not great). Venetian.... last, but definitely not least! I could have stayed here much longer. The wax museum had statues outside to touch and be photographed with: Michael Jordan & Whoopi Goldberg. The canals wander through the building. Strolling minstrels in period costumes wander about. In the town courtyard they offer one free mini show after another... free! We saw the real "Lord of the Dance" dancers perform, listened to a short opera, saw the "Living Statue", jugglers, and more!! Very relaxing and entertaining. There's more-- these were my favorites!! Amongst the revelers on the Strip at Flamingo by Gage17 The Strip is the place to be in Las Vegas on New Year's Eve. They call it "The Times Square of the West", and when you're there, you'd believe it to be so. The major hotels all have fireworks displays that shoot off at midnight, but for me, it is more fun just to be a part of that crowd with a beer in hand. Pirates Under Attack by soccergrrl These aren't like any pirates you've ever seen . . . and any of you who like women in scanty costumes will be glad! (OK, you do get to see a bit of beefcake, too, but the women are the main attraction here.) Treasure Island's revamped (and recamped) free pirate show is pure Vegas cheese and show(wo)manship -- and that's why you've gotta love it. There's a thin plot about a captured boy pirate and his shipmates who come to "rescue" him . . . but this is about girls in thongs dancing on a ship, and men in boots and pirate pants climbing aboard (so to speak). There are still some spectacular explosion effects, and a whole ship sinking (in front of a hotel/casino, right along the street), and some high diving into the water. Leave a Comment Address: In front of Treasure Island (hard to miss ships)Directions: Crowds line up along the wooden sidewalk well before showtimes, and the best spots are reserved for guests of the hotel.Website: http://www.treasureisland.com/pages/ent_main.asp
