Though this museum started as a specialty display for WWII veterans visiting Laughlin, continued donations of materials from the public led to expansion, a permanent home, and the change to recognizing all American Veterans :)
This museum is just part of the American Heroes theme over at the Ramada Express ..... according to what I saw - this has got to be the most patriotic hotel and casino I've ever seen :)
I've included a pic from their website. It's a closeup of a free pin they provide to anyone who presents stating they are a veteran :)
There are so many choices for cruising the Colorado River - and next time I'll take one!
For now, be content to know they exist, and that you can cruise from Laughlin to the north, or from Laughlin to the south (and back in both cases ...) Prices seem reasonable to me - just hadn't brought my motion sickness treatments on the trip!!
Use the web link to discover the companies and tours offered .....
The water taxis take you to the docks of the various casinos along the river in Laughlin. Until recently, it would cost $2 one way - a fantastic low cost option for exploration. But now, they charge $5 one way (they say d/t the gas price increase). This price increase kept me off the boats except for the first day ....
For a single day's wandering, it was fun and gave me great photo ops :) But since it was cheaper to walk, or drive - I didn't repeat my journey on other days ....
One note: though it was a little hair raising at times, we did manage this trip with my friend's scooter! Harrah's dock lined up well with the floor of this pontoon boat, and our pilot was experienced in helping with these sorts of transfers. He knew which dock upstream would allow the best line up for exiting, and for re-entering the boat later. We even got luck! Several hours later, he pulled up to the dock for our return trip!!!
There is a free museum at the Riverside casino which showcases amazing cars! There are 2 showrooms - one along Casino Drive and the other in the South Tower ---- we went to the South Tower one I think. These automobolies are actually from the amazing collection of Don Laughlin himself for whom the city is named....the amazing thin of course is that it is free and open daily.
It was if I remember right at the third floor and watch your kids as you walk along the collection and they are very strict about kids not touching the ropes since the cars might get damaged. of course, I cannot help but jump in the museum itself - carefully of course, with the kids, hehehe
From Lake Mohave runs this river which courses through the city of Laughlin. If you go out of your hotel, you will most likely find a way to a very nice riverwalk where you can move from casino to casino either by walking...or even by water taxis which only cost about $4 (as of 2009) one-way from the Riverside Casino.
What struck me most was how clear the water is and there was a nice cool breeze on that October weekend that we spent there and it was refreshing seeing the strong clear currents of water.
We made a point to take a river cruise in one of these wonderful nostalgic riverboats. They had then the Celebration and Fiesta Queen that are 149 passenger boats. There is a full service bar, snack bar and restrooms on board. We really enjoyed the day and the views up on the top deck were wonderful. They have 3 to 5 narrated sightseeing cruises a day. Please call for pricing and the current cruise schedule.
The boats run year around and are subject to water releases from Davis Dam and weather conditions.
Bob and I were totally pumped to catch some air hitting the sand rails in a dune buggy with Laughlin Adventure Tours . I think we both envisioned a hair-raising race across the desert as we shouted into the wind, loud enough for those behind to hear, "Oh yeah, eat dust baby!" It wasn't quite as imagined but it was fun and probably a whole lot safer than the tour playing in our heads.
The tour started with a 1:30 PM pickup at our hotel in Laughlin, Nevada, The Golden Nugget. The van arrived on time and within minutes we were whisked away to the starting point just across the State line in Bullhead City, Arizona not too far from the Laughlin/Bullhead City International Airport. The dune buggies had been patiently awaiting our arrival and were ready and willing to go so without further ado we loaded in and set forth.
The pace was leisurely and without need for either harness or hardhat. There was little risk of rattled bones that might be groaning in revolt come dawn. The views were tantalizing as we wended our way through washes and slot canyons bordered by steep walls that seemed to soar to the heavens.
There was plenty of opportunity to stop and explore on foot and the guide was very good about pointing out many things our untrained eyes would have missed. Treading uneven ground wasn't the forte of everyone on our tour and those who opted not to simply stayed put.
Overall, it was a fun three hours and we would highly recommend this tour for anyone. The price was $109 US per person (more than we would normally spend) but given the duration, very much worth it.
When you gamble at the Belle, you may have the good fortune of meeting up with 'Red Dome,' the surly pint sized pit-boss with the flat top cut of red hair. He is generally a bitter man who doesn't like his patrons to talk while they gamble. He will ask you to 'shut the hell up' if he feels you are distracting other gamblers.
Note to all gamblers: He will only let you drink approximately 30 vodka/sodas over the course of the evening before he cuts you off. And, he has a '1 fall down rule.' You fall off your chair 1 time while gambling, you are gone!
What i love the most about Lauglin is that you have the river and the Casinos. Trust me, when it gets to be 10y7 degrees F. the river is a good thing, but if you would rather be indoors, the Vegas like casinos is the place to be.
Collecting cheap souvenirs at all of the casinos (see my Las Vegas page for more information). I've started a collection that includes: $1 poker chip - a pair of dice - a slot club membership card - a book of matches - a deck of cards. Total amount spent at each casino, for every souvenir is around $4.
Having something to remember about Laughlin that doesn't cost alot.
