Local traditions and culture in Nevada

The Mojave Desert is home to the Joshua tree. I took this picture not too far from Beatty on highway 95. While I was at the gas station, a group of young motorcyclists from Oregon were stopped working on one of their bikes. The one man said, "I just love the desert. I started getting all misty-eyed when I saw the Joshua trees." He wasn't from Nevada, but I figure a lot of people have the same thoughts. The desert can be lovely.

This tree has to be old because... it's huge. Quite a few are tiny, and have only one stalk.

Dumb Nevada Laws
It's still 'legal' to hang someone for shooting your dog on your property.
It is illegal to drive a camel on the highway.

An ordinance makes bringing a concealable fire arm into the county illegal unless it is registered with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department. In order to register a handgun, however, it must be brought in to the police station. Furthermore, you may not register a gun on the weekends, but the police may prosecute you at that time.

A man is forbidden from buying drinks for more than three people other than himself at any one period during the day.

Whatever you do, please dont jump! Very high suicide rate when it comes to Hoover Dam. OH and dont let them lie to you about the history of the dam. People were buried there. Take the hard hat tour and the river rafting tour. Great place to visit. And hit up Lake Mead. Always a dead hooker or two showing up there. I wonder what Jimmy Hoffa is doing?!

Tips on tipping: Because Vegas is a service-based city, tipping is a big, big deal. Just ask the IRS. You may not be sure how much to tip and when, so here's a quick rundown.

Bellmen: They usually receive $1 a bag, but an extra tip is suggested if you ask them to make show reservations or if they help you with taxis, etc.
Valet parketing attendants: We suggest $1 to $2 for valet parking attendants and for maid service each day.

Cocktail waitresses: About $2 per round is sufficient for a small group (two to three people). Increase it for larger groups. Don't fail to tip, even if your drinks are comped.

These are just suggestions -- you're always welcome to tip more!

If you're prejudiced, watch yourself. People there are very open minded. If you're opinionated or egotistical, watch your attitude. They don't mind an opinion, but don't push. People from all walks of life live in Nevada and visit. Just be friendly and see how the other people interact. Also, don't be afraid to ask for directions. You don't want to end up on the wrong side of Vegas. Trust me!
