The Carnival attitude is not limited to VEGAS

by myrtletea

The whole state has the attitude that passersby are nothing but chumps to be taken advantage of. For example; Buying gas: I stoped to buy gas and had a $50 bill. Having to prepay, I went to the line where you do so and presented the bill. They said they could not take such a large bill, but to go past the slot machines to the teller and get change. Now, they were taking in over $500/hour and my change may have been $20. Can you believe such a shyster move to see if they would get me to drop some coins in the slots? Buy your gas outside of the state: If you see a overabundance of cars along the roadway, my experience says it is from selling bad gas. In these times of harder economic times, small towns like to have people stop for a few days and spend monies at the casinos and such. Selling bad gas is the way that they waylay passersby. When they have you, then you have real troubles....

Las Vegas

by Doug20150

ALL of Las Vegas is a "tourist trap"Don't bother going on the Monorail. It is less than 3 miles long and costs $5, and you have to go through the casinos to get to the train. Be sure that you go "Downtown". This is probably Vegas at it's worst/best. Many things to see and people are more earthy. Like anywhere else, pay attention to your surroundings !!

Reno

by goingsolo

It is pretty harsh to describe an entire city as a tourist trap, especially when you haven't seen the whole city, but I'm going to have to go with my gut on this one. Reno struck me as a wanna be Vegas, and I couldn't help but think that, if I'd wanted to go to Vegas, I would have gone to Vegas. I'm sure there are some lovely areas to Reno, but fortunately or unfortunately, I didn't get to see them. Visit Tahoe. Oh, wait, we're trying to avoid tourist traps here, so that would eliminate South Lake Tahoe from consideration. I'll save that rant for the South Lake Tahoe page. I hear that the North Side is less crowded and more worthy of a visit. And its only an hour away. The Sierra Nevada region of California is also only a couple of hours drive from Reno.

Gambling EVERYWHERE

by Maui-Haui

Slot machines and video poker are in just about every establishment in Reno. Unless this is the reason you went to Reno you might go broke a lot quicker than you had planned. Only keep the amount of money that you don't mind throwing out the window in your pocket. Put the money that you DON'T want to lose in another pocket. When the "throw away" money is gone you are done gambling. Stick to this rule or you may regret it later as you are pawning your wedding ring to take a bus home. Don't put the first nickle into the slot machine.

Hoover dam, a great way to get to Arizona

by hollyday

Unless you are really interested in engineering, Hoover Dam is really pretty boring. We decided to check it out after looking at our roadmap and seeing we could make a small detour on our journey to visit this landmark. We shouldn't have.As we drove over the Dam it all seemed rather impressive. We parked up and walked back towards the dam. Once we got to one of the viewing places, we looked over and thought...it seems a lot smaller than I had imagined? There is not overly much to do here, if you are a huge dam fan you can take a tour. You can count the dead fish floating around on the lake side of the dam.You can look over at the concrete wall again. And, ummmm, well thats it really. There is a small store selling souviners .To cap it off, we missed the turn off and ended up driving back into Las Vegas.

Bally's HotelOkay, I'll admit that I may be in the minority with this opinion, but I didn't like Bally's. I felt that it was hard to get around to the places that I needed to be. (I was attending a conference.) I thought that everything was too expensive and that everything was set up to be more expensive. It offended me slightly that the pay TV channels were on the same circuit as the regular channels. I'd be surfing along and suddenly be in the middle of some pay programming. I'll admit that the pool was pretty, but I can sit around a pool at home.

A nuclear bomb detonates at the Nevada Test Site, which covers an area of 3500 sq km (1350 sq mi) in southern Nevada. The United States conducted atmospheric (above-ground) and underground nuclear tests at the site between 1951 and 1962. All U. S. nuclear tests since July 1962 have been underground, and most have been conducted at this site.

I forgot to mention Hoover Dam. What a wonderful man made dam. I would have to say that this is the most creative place to go. Oh and a very good place to take a date late at night. by gabriellefox

The Casinos - If you can not afford to lose it don't gamble, the House always wins in the end. I have seen it time and time again. Vegas is a place where dreams can be made or shattered according to the turn of a card or the spin of a wheel. It is not the kind of edge I like living my life on. Remember the saying, 'A fool and his money are soon parted'.
