Two items of history we discovered on the main drag. First is the monument at the visitors center to the part Wendover played in the dropping of the first atomic bomb. See my Wendover Utah page for that.
Second was the fact that the first cross country telephone wires were joined at Wendover, connecting east and west, though the call from New York to San Francisco in 1915 did not mention that fact.
On the plaque for the first transcontinental telephone line:
"On June 17, 1914, the first transcontinental telephone line was completed on the border of Nevada and Utah at Wendover. Construction forces of the Bell Telephone Company of Nevada and the Mountain States Telephone and Telegraph Company met here, making the last splices in the wires which joined East and West in voice communications for the first time."
The three big casinos got together and put in a concert Hall. Every week they have entertainment. It is mostly third rate,,,"they used to be good, but it's been awhile", either that or country. There have been a couple I've thought about going to see, but it hasn't happened yet. Regardless, they do sell out alot and the ticket prices can be pretty high, so if you think you want to see a show play way ahead.
West Wendover has the casinos of choice for people in SLC. I suppose without the SLC traffic it would be a different town altogether. Regular bus tours head out there and the participants get discounted food, and hotel rooms and spend their time at the tables, slots or sports betting. I can't speak from alot of experience, but even on a weekend the pace seems relaxed and unhectic. A far cry from the frenzy that is Vegas.
There are 6 casinos, (the original, the Stateline has hit the dust). Montego Bay, PepperMill, and the Rainbow Casino are the three big resorts with hotel, casino and buffets. The Wendover Nugget, Red Garter and Pilot Travel Center take the rest.
