The Common Man, one of a number of affiliated New Hampshire restaurants, was founded in Ashland in 1971. It has a menu full of typical American favorites (delicious macaroni & cheese, gussied-up meatloaf) as well as seafood and vegetarian options. There is an upstairs lounge open in the late afternoons and on weekends. Luncheon guests can serve themselves cheese and crackers while awaiting the arrival of their meals -- or can browse the vast selection of old magazines and postcards. After dining, be sure to pay a visit to the Common Man's Country Store, just across the street, featuring many of the foods and beverages served at the restaurant as well as a penny candy counter, lots of locally-made craft and beauty items, and some decent wines.

Favorite Dish: I had a superb spinach, artichoke and cheddar quiche.
