Elm City Brewing Company: Keene's Brewpub
It seems like every town has a brewpub these days, and they can vary wildly in quality. This is a pretty decent entry in the genre, with a very solid beer lineup: we tried four on our last visit, and all bar one met with enthusiasm from our well-versed crew!
The decor is a little on the boring side, and there's a lack of atmosphere in the dining side, but there are a few touches that balance that out, like the attractive booths (if you get one), and the pot of Trivial Pursuit questions on the tables, perfect for whiling away time until the food gets there. You may even find yourself asking questions while eating!
Favorite Dish: The pasta dishes are a standout here: they use very fresh ingredients, including plenty of tomatoes. It's nice to go to a brewpub where the healthier alternatives aren't an afterthought.
The traditional sandwich fare is all pretty decent too, of course, but we'll vote for the pasta - and the great nachos. They say one order is good for two people, but we disagree. One order is good for four people!
Fritz Belgian Fries: Panini, Belgian Fries, and Lambic
A relatively new Keene establishment, Fritz has quickly become one of our favorite lunch stops. The fries are wonderful, there is always a great selection of paninis if you feel the need for something a bit healthier, and the beer menu is unique. They have Stella Artois on tap and bottled Unibroues, Ommegang Abbey Ale, Hennepin, and Lindemans Lambics.
Favorite Dish: Obviously, you can't eat here and not try the fries and a variety of sauces. We especially like the Special Sauce, a combination of fritessaus (a traditional mustardy mayonnaise imported from Holland), ketchup and fresh onion.
Rick's Gourmet Ice Cream: Soft Serve or Hard-Packed? Your Choice!
Rick's is tucked away in a rather unattractive mall - especially in the evening, when everything else is closed. Of course, you soon forget about the surroundings when you're confronted with a list of something like 45 possibilities, plus cakes!
They emphasise the soft-serve custard-style ice-cream here, but some of the hard-packed stuff is just as good, so experiment away.
Subway: Gas, Food and Laundry
We went through Princeton, and Troy NH. I was looking for a place to eat (and use the bathroom) but it was so rural that there wasn't anything. Finally when we got to Keene, I saw a Subway sign and we pulled in. It turned out to be a carry-out only, but there were bathrooms and we could also have done a wash if we had wanted to. :) as it was the site of Bird House Laundry and also a Citgo Station there.
So we ate in the car, and continued on our way.
