Our trip to Peterborough was to visit an antique dealer who specializes in early hardware for 1700's and 1800's houses. We're in the process of restoring our front hallway and replacing some doors and hardware, so we needed to find another "bean latch". This is the man to see. His pieces are cleaned, restored and complete...all important factors when you get into restoration projects. His prices are moderate...all things considered. He sells by appt. or at antique shows, but doesn't have a shop. One room of the house was full of items for sale which are being stored until dragged off to an antique show.
He'll be in Deerfield, Mass. on Aug. 7, and the Green Mountain Antiques Show in Woodstock, Vermont on July 21 and 22.
He's pictured here in his Marine uniform, having just marched in the Memorial Day Parade that morning.
charming couple. Excellent to do business with.

There was a covered seating area beside the river where we chose to have lunch. My dog was with us and this offered a perfect place for her to be out of the car and with us during lunch. (She's always alert for the leftovers.)
The area is surrounded with gardens and is obviously a favorite spot for many of the locals. There was a continuous stream of people who came past as they took some time to walk along the river.
There is a short walking trail which seemed to be popular.

The weather was perfect for bike riding the day we were in Peterborough. These cyclists obviously agreed. The roads surrounding this town are quiet country roads that wind and twist among the farms and woods, making it wonderful territory for riding. Shaded streets had little traffic and the two lane roads seemed far safer than the 4 and 6 lane highways.

Seems to be the hot spot in town. Full house when we arrived for lunch on Memorial Day. We chose to do take out and sit by the river....but there is outside seating in front of the diner if you like. Standard diner fare...and if you sit inside, it's vintage stuff from top to bottom. These diners are fun, and there is an organization trying to preserve as many as possible throughout the northeast. One local school has taken an old diner as a study project for students. They will restore the diner. Art students will work on graphics and decor, and other students will work on menu and recipes.
Well, anyway....Peterboro Diner is a good stop for burgers or salad if you are up that way.

Favorite Dish: Burger and fries....which were quite tasty. Not the usual cardboard fries.

The Chocolate Cafe is a local shop which is full of home made choclates. They also serve coffee (Seattle's Best), and soups. The whole shop smelled of delicious treats. They sell home made chocloates as well as other food gift items. I loved the molded choclate letters, and bought a "W" just for me for $1.00. The Barbie ice cream cakes were adorable, too...

They also have seating outside, which is a great way to people watch and enjoy the fall foliage.

Favorite Dish: The chili in a brad bowl was hot and delicious. Huge chunks of beef, and all for $3.75.

Joe Brennan doesn't have a shop, he sells from his home by appt. or at antiques shows (see previous tip for further info).
If you are restoring an old house, you will appreciate being able to find a 1700's bean latch set with all the parts...as well as "H-L hinges" all cleaned and perfectly matched. In addition he has other types of hardware which are sometimes difficult to find. He meticulously cleans and prepares everything so you can install immediately...with paint or oil.
