Absecon Lighthouse by tpangelinan The Absecon Lighthouse was 1st lighted on Jan. 15th 1857. Jonathan Pitney supervised the contruction after him was Lt. George Meade who later went on to lead the Union Army at Gettysburg. The lighthouses purpose was to guide ships past the Absecon & Brigantine Shoals. There had been many frequent wrecks along that section of the coast. After the lighthing of the first-order lens there had been no reports of any wrecks. This lighthouse has had a few paint jobs, in 1872 it was painted white with a red band in the middle to increase its day time effectiveness, in 1898 the board changed the colors to orange with a black stripe in the middle. This lighthouse was decommissioned in 1933 by an electric beacon on the famed Steel Pier. In 1948 hte US Coast Guard gave the tower to the city. Since then the lighthiuse has been restored to its origanl condition, completed in 1998. You can visit the lighthouse and climb the 228 steps to the top for some great views. Landmark Steel Pier Amusements by tpangelinan The original pier opened in 1898, entertainment has always drawn the top names here and really got big from the 1920's up to the 1950's. In 1925 the circus came to town with George Hamid how was wish the Buffalo Bill Show, started the outdoor circus shop with the human cannonball and the diving horse. I remember seeing the diving horse when I was young and having a lot of fun here at the Steel Pier. They have all kinds of games, rides, bumper cars, bumper boats, grand prix go-karts and much more, even go-karts for the kids. Leave a Comment

Marina by tpangelinan Go for a nice quiet walk along the marina, when we were there it was quiet, but may not be during summer season. There are some great little restaurants back there and an ice cream shop, grab a scoop while you walk. Take you camera, you may want to take a few of the boats that are docked. The Bally's Wild Wild West casino has a Wild West theme, and is probably the most notable of all the casinos in the atlantic city area. Upon entering from the Boardwalk, you see an animated mountain scene with waterfalls, mines and a running stream and lots of people taking pictures with it. The mountain, which rises about 20 feet in the air, is accompanied by animatronic characters, such as a “49er” panning for gold and telling stories of the Old West alongside his companion, a trusty burro. There's also a talking vulture and a rattlesnake. Above, theres a darkening sky with an approaching storm, which lights up the mountain with flashes of lightning as thunder roars throughout the room. Across from the mountain are various storefronts, all designed in an old west style. Inside the gaming hall, the theme continues, complete with the weathered wood of the old west buildings, the gun shop, the general store, the undertaker, the dance hall and the saloon. In the middle of the casino is the town bank (casino cage). New Western scenes are also here, with even the restrooms decorated like abandoned mine shafts. Scattered throughout the casino are 17 robots that perform in 30-minute intervals with four different action scripts. Boardwalk view by bct341 It is easy to access most of the casinos from the boardwalk. Currently there are 12 Casino/hotels in Atlantic City, almost all are on the boardwalk but recently casinos are starting to be built away from the beach/boardwalk area. Leave a Comment

Wow, Cheap Dinner at the Store at the backgwound by machomikemd, 3 more photos The Atlantic City Boardwalk gained fame or notoriety due to the Board Game MONOPOLY which was based on real estate acquisitions of which it is the most expensive piece of real estate. The first Atlantic City Boardwalk, built in 1870, was small and crude at only 12 feet wide, and was designed only to help keep sand out of the Boardwalk hotels. It today stretches almost 4 ½ miles long, 40 feet wide, and is lined with unique shops, premier casinos and hotels, as well as well-known tourist attractions and is a must-see when visiting Atlantic City. The World Famous Atlantic City Boardwalk starts at Absecon Inlet and runs along the beach for four miles (six kilometers) to the city limit. An additional one and one half miles (two kilometers) of the Boardwalk extend into Ventnor City. Casino/hotels front the boardwalk, as well as retail stores, restaurants, and amusements shops. Several piers extend the boardwalk over the Atlantic Ocean. Garden Pier houses the Atlantic City Historical Museum and the Atlantic City Art Center. Also Famous within the Atlantic City Boardwalk is the Boardwalk Hall Atlantic City, the famous Boardwalk entertainment and special events hall that first opened to the public in 1929. The hall seats 13,800 people and is listed on the United State Register of Historic Places as a National Historic Landmark
