  • Cabs in Atlantic Ciry are only allowed to charge $8 anywhere in the city. There a few outlying zones that are $2 more. Don't let them charge you any more than that!

If a cab driver tries to take advantage of you, ask for his cab ID and write it down. Most times they will drop the price. Feel free to report any that won't. You can call City Hall to file a complaint.

Jitneys, (little blue buses that hold 13 people) are $1.50 US and Public Transportation Buses are $1.10 for one zone.

As always we say that this is a big waste of time and money, same stuff in every town. I feel time can be much better spent, like enjoying the beach!

They’re waiting for you every time you step out of a casino onto the Boardwalk. They cost $5 (0-5 blocks), $10 (6-12), $15 (13-21), $20 (22-32), but remember the blocks are very short here. Beware of the yellow lines down the center of the Boardwalk. That’s their roadway, so keep to the sides if you’re just strolling along.

Try to negotiate. Agree on the fare to your destination before getting in. The price is the same regardless of the number of people that pile into the chair.

    Not using a calling
    card...

You can put money in pay-phones, call from your hotel, use your mobile or use a calling card.. You also can buy prepaid calling cards at shops, gas stations and newsstands.

Some of the above can result in a search for small change or lead to high telephone costs.

Some prepaid cards has good rates to but be aware for hidden fees like starting costs or payphone costs we started with a card from dutch royal telecom KPN, but the discontinued this service. We looked further and find One Tel home and away card...

It was ok but still the rate was kind of high.

The calling card we are using now is from telegroup direct, but there are more companies who supplies these cards.
With this card you call a free number and then your card number after this you can call home at a much nicer rate you would get elsewhere. The card itself is free no annual fees you'll only pay when you use it, and billing takes place afterward, so no need to find quarters....

We would like to have tips for calling cards that has better rates as which we are currently using.

  • You can't help noticing the many prostitutes around the casinos soliciting for a 'Jon.' I don't know whether these nightwalkers in fact 'traps tourists' or not, but just say NO to street prostitutes in Atlantic City. If you need further incentive as to why, just see my comments relating to the water off the boardwalk and think about it.

  • SLOT MACHINES AND KENO
These two games are by far the worst possible ways to spend your gambling dollars.
Here is a quick math lesson for the doubters out there:
    SLOTS
assume there is a 90% payout rate on slots (AC avg is about 90%), which means for every dollar played, 90 cents are returned to the gambler.
    You start with $100.
    that becomes 90
you play that 90, you're left with 81
you play your $81, you're left with $72,
you play your $72, you're left with $65
get it? Additionally, that 90% payout reflects your hitting the maximum jackpot at some point.
Do you know the odds of you hitting that $1.5 million quartermania jackpot?
    roughly, 49,787,136 to 1.
    KENO
This one's easy... if you want to play keno, just send the casino a check and save yourself the gas and tolls. Take the simplest Keno bet: 1 number.
If you bet $1 and hit your 1 number, you win $1 (you get your original buck back of course).
Pretty easy, right. you pick 1 number out of 80. They draw 20 numbers. Hmmm, looks like 4-1 against you winning, not even money, as you're paid. Even better: the 10 spot or 20 spot keno ticket. You've probably noticed a few signs in the Keno lounge: 'Maximum Aggregate Payout: $50000'.
That means the casino is not going to payout more than $50K per game - TOTAL!
So, hypothetically, if 50,000 people play $1 10 number tickets, and all players hit 10of10... they each get $2. 1 for their original bet, 1 as their share of the $50K aggregate payout.
Of course, you're not going to have that many players playing or winning, but the odds of you hitting 10 of 10 are ASTRONOMICAL.... millions and millions and millions to 1. But the most you'll win is $50,000. And you might have to split that with someone else.

Stick to these games if you want to have the best chance of winning:
blackjack - buy a $1 basic strategy card, memorize it, don't question it. It is the correct play.
craps - only bet the pass line/don't pass line with maximum odds, and place the 6&8.
baccarat - player or banker, don't bet 'tie'.
Those 3 games will keep the house edge below 1.5%, which is almost like betting on a 50-50 bet and getting paid even money.

  • Gambling. I guess you have to decide the entertainment value of gaming, and stick with that. Jon came out $70 ahead. I didn't try at all. I prefer to gamble in mutual funds. It is really sad to see people who can't afford it, just hooked on that something for nothing, get rich myth.

  • A lot small items in the gift shops at the boardwalk can be bought at a Boardwalk dollar store (Everthing 99 cents!). But spend the extra couple of buck's and buy real salt water taffy from JAMES'.

    Taxi, bad drivers???

  • I read some tips here before leaving for Atlantic City and they said that Taxi's can charge no more than $8.00, i guess those were old cuz when i went last month i believe it was raised to $12.00. So i got a cab in front of my hotel (Boardwalk Holiday Inn) and took it down to Trump. This driver was either the worst driver ive ever ridden with or he was doing it on purpose, driving slow, acting like he didnt know where he was going etc, just so the fare would get up to the max. I asked him to take me to a spot on the boardwalk, not to trump and im sure there was a possibilty he didnt know it, but i also gave him landmark points. One thing that really stood out though was, how slow he was driving. There was a little traffic on the main strip, but nothing to warrant driving like all the cars were out to get him. Anyways, the fare got up to $12.00 i even gave a nice tip, though i shouldnt have.

Before you get into a cab, make sure you let them know exactly where you want to go. Hopefully you'll know where it is and how far you have to go. That might lower your fare a little bit.

Even though Cabs are a little more expensive than buses id stil recommend taking a cab, its a lot quicker.
