Atlantic City is a grid, so navigation in the city is easy because roads either parallel the boardwalk or are at right-angles to it. Unfortunately, the blocks are very short and every intersection has a set of lights. You know you’re in trouble when you notice that the streets are commonly named after the 50 States. Personally, I like to park at a hotel that is close to the highway that I drove in on, but your needs may differ.

If you arrive at Atlantic City via US30, there is no obvious landmark with which to mark your entrance /exit to the city. You will go by the Marina district (Trump Marina, Harrah’s, Borgata) as you cross route 87. If you continue, route 30 turns into Delaware Ave and eventually ends at the entrance to the Showboat. The Showboat is at the north end of the casinos (Uptown), so you’ll probably want to turn right on Atlantic Ave to get to other hotels.

It took me several trips to notice, but there are helpful signs to point the way to various districts and individual hotels. The city is divided into four districts and the signs are color coded with a different symbol for each district:

Downbeach - symbol: sun, color: green

Midtown - symbol: lighthouse, color: red

Uptown - symbol: seahorse, color: blue

Marina - symbol: sailboat, color: purple

You’d think that parking at the casino hotels would be free to encourage patrons, but it’s not. Some hotels have more than one garage and there can be more than one entrance from different streets into a garage. The following is a summary of parking available:

    Downbeach
Hilton - Boston Ave, $10 or $3 for club members
Tropicana – Brighton Ave, $10 or $4 for club members

    Midtown
    Trump Plaza – Mississippi, $4
Caesars – Christopher Columbus Blvd, $5
Wild Wild West – (use Bally’s) Michigan, $5
    Bally’s – Michigan or Ohio, $5
    Clardige - Park Place, $5
Sands – Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd, $3 or free for club members

    Uptown
    Resort – North Carolina, $4
Trump Taj Mahal – Virginia, $4
Showboat – Delaware, $5 or free for club members

    Marina
    Trump Marina - Huron, $4
    Harrahs - Harrah's Blvd, $4
    Borgata - Borgata Way, $5

Getting to Atlantic City by AIR

  • Atlantic City International Airport - Atlantic City

Getting to Atlantic City by air isn't as easy as getting to many major tourist destinations in the USA.

The Atlantic City International Airport is about 20 minutes from the boardwalk and the casinos in Pomona. The airport serves as a secondary hub for Spirit airlines; which offers non-stop and connecting service to many domestic, and 2 international (Cancun and San Juan), destinations; while Comair (the Delta Connection) offers nonstop flights to Cincinatti 3x daily, where connections are available to virtually every major North American city as well as Paris, Fr.. Although only 2 airlines serve the airport now, US Airways, Continental, and BMA (Pan Am Express) usually find their way back during the summer months. Rental cars are available at the airport, and cabs to downtown will cost around $23.

The Philadelphia International Airport is about 90 minutes from Atlantic City and offers nonstop and connecting service to many US cities and select European cities.

We did not know how long was the travel between New York and Atlantic City.
    It lasts 2H30 by coach.
The coach (company : Academy) leaves at Port Authority (42th Street).
The ticket worths 27 $ (round trip) but if you are a "twice visitor" it costs less (22$). When we arrived a hotess offered us a 15$ coupon to gamble.
For the return : you must choose the hour according to the casino you leave except if you go from the bus station.
Be aware there could be a long line.

  • The A.C. Expressway - Atlantic City
    The A.C. Expressway
    by matt1168
Atlantic City is easily accessible from many major Northeastern Cities by car.

The Atlantic City Expressway (toll) connects Downtown Atlantic City directly with Philadelphia, about 90 minutes to the west. The AC Expressway intersects the Garden State Parkway (which connects northern NJ and New York City with Southern NJ and Cape May) about 6 miles west of Atlantic City, and the NJ Turnpike (which goes from New York City to Philadelphia and Delaware) near Philadelphia.

The AC Expressway also connects with I-95 in Philadelphia.

US30 also connects Atlantic City with Philadelhia, but it is much more congested than the AC Expressway... even if it costs $2.50 more.
