The Mad Batter: Disappointing
I had read several good reviews of the Mad Batter so it was quite high on my list of restaurants to try while in Cape May, but I have to say that we were pretty disappointed. The location is good, in an old Victorian house (now the Carroll Villa Hotel on centrally located Jackson Street. There is space for outdoor dining on the front porch but the weather had turned chilly at night when we visited so we opted to go inside to the much-vaunted “skylit dining room” which turned out to be more of a passageway.
Favorite Dish: To start with we ordered the “Babaghanoush” to share, which consisted of a rather small blob of eggplant salad, a more generous one of hummus which was a bit bland and under-flavoured, and some good olives, accompanied by pitta bread. My main of crab cakes with sweet potatoes was OK, though like the hummus a little bland, and with only two pieces of tomato as accompaniment rather stodgy as well. Chris meanwhile had chosen the tempting-sounding scallops with lobster ravioli and wild mushrooms. On his first tasting he liked the flavours but as he ate the dish seemed to get more and more oily until everything tasted more of that than of itself. The meal was partly redeemed by the good New York cheesecake we shared for dessert. The service was friendly but got a little brisk towards the end of the meal – it was only 8.30 PM but we felt that they were in a hurry for us to leave, though plenty of other tables were available and the customers on the only other occupied one hadn’t even started their meal. Our dinner cost us $92 with a couple of glasses of wine and tax – a lot for such a disappointing meal.
Having said all that, the restaurant has won several awards so it’s possible we just caught them on a bad day I guess. But we didn’t go back a second time to find out if we’d misjudged them!
The Mad Batter: Dining at a National Landmark
The Mad Batter is located in the Caroll Villa B&B in Cape May on a beautiful tree lined street. It is a Registered Historic Landmark built in 1882 and larger than it seems from the street. You'll find dinner options such as the Maryland Crab cakes or Orange Lavender Roast Chicken. The Mad Batter serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. We enjoyed our meal here!
When the weather is pleasant, a rear dining area opens to a courtyard that makes for a very romantic meal! The Mad Batter is consistently rated as one of the best restaurants in Cape May.
The Mad Batter: THE place to dine
The Mad Batter provides a large unique breakfast. The coffee is good, the breakfast menu is also good. If you wish, the full service bar will provide you great mimosas early in the AM. It is also open for every other meal, but I've only been fortunate enough to eat breakfast here. Always a treat and usually not too crowded. A definate must do!
Favorite Dish: Morgan Rostie...lump crabmeat (and I mean LUMP, the crab alone should be the cost of the meal), gryere cheese, potatoes, egg and lots of other great things (once again, fiance is a fan of the crab, not me, but even i've enjoyed tasting this dish)
The Mad Batter at the Carroll...
The Mad Batter at the Carroll Villa Hotel.
Very polite staff and a balcony where one can dine and enjoy the sunny, warm weather during the Spring and Summer.
Favorite Dish: There was no one favorite. Everything was delicious. Though the Crab Cakes were outstanding.
The Mad Batter: Great Breakfast!
The Mad Batter is famous in Cape May. It is open for Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner. We went for breakfast. Fortunately there was only a short wait. It was worth the wait. Each of the five of us had a different dish from eggs benedict to specialty pancakes and everything was excellent. The service was very good as well. Our only disappointment was not getting to visit for lunch or dinner!
Outdoor dining on the porch would be especially nice in the warmer weather but it is so popular that I would recommend making reservations - www.opentable.com. If you stay at the Villa, you get breakfast vouchers and discount coupons for dinner (30% off). I would definitely eat here again.

The Mad Batter: Great Place!
Me and my wife went to Mad Batter last month and our lunch at the Mad Batter was our first meal in Cape May. It made for a wonderful welcome. It was very good the service was good and the atmosphere very cool. We both had one of the specials which was a lobster & crab quiche with a side salad. The quiche was an individual size as opposed to a slice of a larger quiche & it was delicious with large pieces of lobster and crab.
