Biking, Cape May
There are several places in Cape May to rent surreys or bicycles--Cape Island Bicycles is one of them. If you have leisure time, why not see Cape May at your own speed!
Rates are $4.00 per hour to rent kid bikes or $9.00 for the day; a single speed bike is $4.00 per hour or $10 for the day; tandem bike $10 per hour; adult tricycle $6 per hour; jogging stroller $5 per hour or $12.00 for the day. This shop also rents surreys by the hour, $25 for small and $30 for large.
If you a short a beach chair or two, the charge is $5 for the day or $15 for the week.
This nicely kept place (the John McConnell House) is a private home located on Columbia Street in Cape May. Surprisingly, not all of the Victorian homes have been turned into B&B's! Many of them have dated plaques showing the approximate age of the homes.
Cape May is a very walkable town and one can get a good glimpse of it this way. Surreys, bikes, trolley and horse carriage rides are other popular modes for seeing this historic place.
Excellent shopping can be found at Washington Mall, where the ticket booth is located and souvenirs can be found in abundance.
This gave us a different view of Cape May, but it sure was hard pedaling! My daughter is giving her opinion of the driving from the back seat! Surreys are a very popular way of seeing the town. Each time we visit, surreys are plying these historic streets!
There are a number of places that rent surreys. One just has to drive around town to find them. If you happen to be in a car and find yourself behind one, please be patient. It's not easy making your way through town on one of these conveyances.
Pricing as of July, 2009: The Village Bicycle Shop charges $15 per hour for a two person surrey, $30 per hour for a four person surrey. They are located at 605 LaFayette St. (609-884-8500).
Go for a bike ride around town, this is one of the best ways to see Cape May and it's beautiful victorian hotels & homes. Make sure you bring your camera on this trip with lots of batteries. This is a relaxing way to view the beauty of this town, it really takes you back in time. There are many places to lock your bikes up so you can walk and explore too. You can bike to North Cape May to Cape May Point State Park then Sunset Beach with no problems because it is so flat, no hills at all.
Rent a bike and ride around town...you see so much because it's not that big.
You can stop and look at all the Victorian homes, grab a bite to eat, ride the boardwalk, go shopping and see the beach all in one afternoon!
