Cape May County Zoo
Cape May County Zoo started as a child's petting zoo in the mid-1970s but has since grown to become a significant attraction in the area, although somewhat surprisingly entry to it is still free of charge though a donation is requested and is well-deserved). There is a surprisingly large collection of animals which despite what I’d read I felt were not all kept in the very best of conditions, though many were. For instance, there is a large Savannah enclosure where zebra, giraffes, antelope etc have space in which to roam, whereas the leopards had far too little space in their cage. I sensed it is a zoo in transition from old-style to new, but the efforts to provide the best for the majority of the animals was clear, as were the indications of a successful breeding programme, so on balance I think it is worth a visit and deserving of support.
Among the highlights for me were a really beautiful tiger, the ring-tailed lemurs and red pandas, the snakes (I have a weird liking for these!) and the elegant flamingos. We also enjoyed the boardwalk that takes you through and over the savannah area, as that affords plenty of opportunities to take photos of the animals there without the intrusion of wire and cages – assuming they’ll come near enough, that is!
Spring & Summer: 10.00 AM – 4.45 PM
Autumn & Winter: 10.00 AM – 3.45 PM
There is a gift shop selling lots of things likely to appeal to animal lovers, especially children, and a small snack bar where we bought a light lunch.
Cape May County Zoo
This FREE (though donations are asked for and much deserved) Zoo is much more than you would expect. They have a ton of exotic animals and totally exceeded expectations. It's a great trip just outside of Cape May and there are other things to do in the park other than the zoo if you have a family.
"The Zoo is open every day of the year except Christmas.
Spring and summer hours are 10AM to 4:45PM. (During the winter and late fall, the zoo closes at 3:45PM.)"
The Cape May County Zoo
I grew up going to this Zoo. Its a great place to go, walk around, and relax. The great part is, its FREE. sometimes there are people standing out side asking for a donation of 1 dollar, to keep the zoo free. No problem here ! Donate 1 dollar and enjoy all the animals and fresh air. There is a reptile house, an african safari, and an exotic bird house. Everything you could ask for in a small FREE zoo !
