The Elephant & Castle Pub: Easy Eats

The Elephant & Castle Pub: Easy Eats, Cherry Hill

Rhondaj Says:  Cozy pub with a restaurant side too. Lots of tv's on the pub side tuned into sports channels. (Go Eagles!) Usual pub food fare, burgers and such. Cherry Hill has so many restaurants and diners, you wouldn't want to make this place your hang-out. But if you're staying here at...

Ponzio's: Breakfast Anytime, Cherry Hill

ExGuyParis Says:  To me it will always be a diner, even though it now bills itself as a restaurant Milk Shakes the old-fashioned way.

The picture of the Supremes is actually from the Steel Pier, a lost landmark of Atlantic City... about sixty miles from Cherry Hill. This was the first time I saw Cindy Birdsong as a stand-in for Florence Ballard. They did not announce this substitution; they packed Cindy into Flo's gown and wig and tried to have her "pass." In this shot, Cindy is the one who is slightly "off" in the choreography department. The true fans were anguished.

Transportation

Sheer Aggravation

common sight

This maddening traffic law begins at about Woodbury and plagues towns northward ever after.

You can see where you want to be, there it is right on the LEFT side of the divided highway. BUT at the next traffic light you see a No Left Turn sign. This means you have to longingly look at where you wish to be, pass it by, stay in the right lane and watch for a Left Turns Here sign. In other words, you have to turn right to go left!

Very Exasperating.

Cherry Hill Mall, Continued

Cherry Hill Mall, Continued, Cherry Hill

ExGuyParis Says:  In many ways, the mall was the central point of social interaction. This view, also from the 60's (could you perhaps guess because of the dress?), shows the section of the mall where the Cherry Hill High School West Class of 1969 held its junior prom. Yes, I was there.

More Mall

More Mall, Cherry Hill

ExGuyParis Says:  The Cherry Hill Mall was born in 1961. It has been expanded and modernized several times, but this is the way it will always look in my heart.

The Cherry Hill Mall

The Cherry Hill Mall, Cherry Hill

ExGuyParis Says:  As Cherry Hill had no "down town," the Cherry Hill Mall was the place where my friends and I hung out in our teen-age years. This is a view from the early days of the mall's life.

Joe Canal's Discount Liquor Store: Discount Liquor

Joe Canal's Discount Liquor Store: Discount Liquor, Cherry Hill

Rhondaj Says:  I go to this store because they have lots of imported beer. And if they don't have it, they will try to order it for you. And the prices are good. I paid $20 for a case of Erdinger for example.

Local Customs

Another Lost Custom: The Hawaiian Cottage

Another Lost Custom: The Hawaiian Cottage, Cherry Hill

ExGuyParis Says:  What were they thinking? How could they? They tore down the Hawaiian Cottage, a nightclub shaped like a pineapple, where you could go for a lei and a delicious tropical drink, and in its place they built some boring fast-food chain restaurant. You can pass its ghost on Route...

A Local Custom of the Past: The Latin Casino

A Local Custom of the Past: The Latin Casino, Cherry Hill

ExGuyParis Says:  A great nightclub-- all the stars were there: Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Junior, Tom Jones, Tiny Tim... and THE SUPREMES. Here, my mother and I wait for the arrival onstage of Mary Wilson, Florence Ballard, and Diana Ross-- November 2, 1965. It was a tragic day when they...

Off The Beaten Path

A not so historic covered bridge

A not so historic covered bridge, Cherry Hill

ExGuyParis Says:  Developer Robert Scarborough, as he was turning the beautiful Barclay Farmstead into hundreds of post-war baby-boom tract houses, decided to build a covered bridge across a branch of the Cooper River (so he could extend the road and build more houses).Scarborough Bridge was...

One of the few old things in Cherry Hill

One of the few old things in Cherry Hill, Cherry Hill

ExGuyParis Says:  Barclay Farmstead, the original farmhouse that gave its name to a 1960's housing development, Barclay Farms. This building is now swallowed up by suburban sprawl, but it is still there, hidden somewhere.
