Among the marchers in the procession are the boys who carry the canopy. The canopy has been used to protect the statue of the Madonna when it rains.
My brother Alex is on the right, helping to carry the canopy.
The festival of the Madonna dei Martiri, is held in early September. This is held on the waterfront, where the saint is placed on the boat in the Hudson River with many devotees, simulating the tradition from Molfetta, Italy, where it originated.
Frank Sinatra and I have some things in common: we were both born in Hoboken, and we were baptized in the same church. My parents were married, I was baptized, and almost everyone I know was married here in St. Francis Church. It's a wonderful little church--visit it if you're in town!
Mass is in Italian at 11am on Sundays.
During the procession women devotees march saying prayers and singing hymns to the Madonna. Our dear friend Maria is in the center of the picture.
My mom is behind the canopy which is placed in front of the St. Francis Church entrance. The statue of the Madonna is dressed with flowers and jewelry prior to her unveiling.
The statue of the Madonna is adorned with gold jewelry, donated by devotees of the saint.
It is placed on her as part of her "dress" for the procession on feast day.
In the summer there are several church festivals, including St. Ann's, pictured here. This is held annually on St. Ann's day in July.
