The Bagel Smashery: A great breakfast place.

by seamandrew Written Aug 24, 2005

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Open for both breakfast and lunch, the Bagel Smashery is one of the best places in Hoboken to get bagels. The reason this place gets it's name is because of it's patented bagel smasher which will smash and toast any bagel sandwich you make. The result is a much thinner bagel that is absolutely delicious. I prefer this place for breakfast or brunch.

Unfortunately, this restaurant is very small and there is practically not seating (certainly no tables) within. So if you go, expect to take it to go. The Bagel Smashery originally opened up in Hoboken, but I first learned of it when they opened up across the street from my High School in North Bergen, NJ. Since then, the North Bergen location is gone and only the Hoboken location is open.

Favorite Dish: So far my favorite is a smashed whole wheat bagel with virginia ham & mozzarella cheese. Yummy!

Sushi House of Hoboken: Fabulous Sushi in Hoboken

by seamandrew Updated Aug 24, 2005

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

If there's one thing Hoboken is not short of, it is Sushi Restaurants. There are at least 5 if not more. I have not tried them all, but I've been to 4 of them and of the 4 I've tried, the Sushi House of Hoboken is the best. Unlike most of the restaurants they're off of the main street (Washington Street) on First Street. This place is always full and you should call ahead for a reservation (even during the week). You can also choose to do take out and they deliver the same great quality. The ambience inside the restaurant is very cool and inviting. It can get noisy in there, but you can still here yourself and your dinner guests. They have specials on certain days so be sure to ask!

Favorite Dish: My two favorite items from their menu are the Fantasy roll and one of the signature rolls which is called Lady in Red. Both are amazingly good. Fantasy is Tuna, Salmon, Yellowtail & mango and the Lady in Red is Crab, tempura flakes, spicy sauce wrapped in tune and red tobiko. Yum Yum!

Leo's Grandevous: Reasonably Priced Italian Food in Hoboken

by virtualpatrick Written Dec 7, 2003

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Despite the dive-ish look of this place from the outside, there is good, reasonably priced italian food at Leo's. There's a nice little bar area to wait in when waiting for an empty table.

Cash only (there's an ATM on the premises). No reservations accepted (although if you have a group, talk with Joyce the bartender who comes in at 4p the day of and she will try to save a table for you).

    Piccolo's: Cheesesteak and Sinatra

by nicolettart Updated Aug 13, 2003

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Favorite Dish: If you love Sinatra, you gotta come here. Been here since 1955, and the owner, Sparky, will talk Sinatra with you if you want. You will see photos plastered all over the walls, and there's ALWAYS Frank tunes playing. Oh, I almost forgot this is a food tip---do not miss the cheesesteak here. It's a real steak on Italian bread--fantastic!

    Hot Italian Bread

by nicolettart Written Aug 13, 2003

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Favorite Dish: When in Hoboken be sure to stop at any of the Italian delis or bread bakeries and get yourself a loaf of hot Italian bread. It's the best thing around! While you're here, also stop and get some smoked mozzarella, some black Greek olives, and a small cappacollo (gabagool) hard salami. OOPS!
I just gave you my grocery list!! I really love all the simple food you can get here, and cheap, too! Don't miss the Italian delis.

    La Isla: El Cubano

by nicolettart Written Jun 16, 2003

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

This restaurant is tiny, with a diner counter and maybe 8 small tables-for-4. It's almost always packed, so the food is worth it!

Favorite Dish: Here's a typical meal I might have here: Start with a fresh banana shake, then have an empanada de carne (meat turnover) or platanos (fried bananas).Order El Cubano, the Cuban sandwich. The cuban sandwich consists of ham, roast pork, cheese and garlic. It's great!!!!

    Hoboken has many, many...

by JERICO Written Aug 25, 2002

    1.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Hoboken has many, many restaurants and cafes. Some are on the main street and some are well hidden, and it pays to poke around. For brunch, I always enjoyed Amanda's on Washington Street, for casual pub-grub try Zacks. Pizza is easy to find. My personal favorite is Imposto's (which made some good sandwiches as well). For lunch, check out Luca Brasi's which closes early and sometimes runs out of bread, but makes a variety of extremely good sandwiches ('HEROES') that are named after movie characters (especially from The Godfather - 'Luca Brasi sleeps with the fishes...').

Brightly lit, art deco interior, lounge chairs, wireless internet access, outdoor sidewalk seating, and soft ice cream ... what a nice place to relax, sip some coffee, and chat with friends.
