If you want to get a gut-wrenching look into NJ life from a different perspective, rent any movie by Kevin Smith, a NJ native who has made some of my favorite movies including Dogma & Clerks. He has put Red Bank, NJ on the maps (okay, having upscale shopping & eating helped as well). There is a store on Broad Street dedicated to comic books and Jay & Silent Bob (who is Kevin Smith). Check it out. Leave a Comment

In suburban towns, people sometimes say hi to each other. In cities, eye contact is NOT recommended. Tip well especially if returning to restaurant another day. Tipping in the USA is 15% based on pre-tax check total though no problem if you tip on total bill. If service stinks, tip less. Never complain about the restaurant before food is served. You'll never know what has been placed into your food behind the scenes-wait to complain until after the food has been brought. In North Jersey, New York City is known as 'the city'. In South Jersey, Philadelphia is known as 'the city'. Leave a Comment

by photobf Dumb New Jersey Laws You cannot pump your own gas. All gas stations are full service and full service only. [Reader Comments on this Law.] On a highway you can not park under a bridge....you know, this never made sense to me until the other day when we had a horrible rain storm and there they were....parked underneath the bridge!!! It is against the law for a man to knit during the fishing season. It is against the law to 'frown' at a police officer. If you have been convicted of driving while intoxicated, you may never again apply for personalized license plates. Car dealerships are forbidden from opening on Sunday. You may not slurp your soup. Automobiles are not to pass horse drawn carriages on the street. It is illegal to delay or detain a homing pigeon. Bernards Township It is illegal to frown as the town is a 'Frown-Free Town Zone'. Caldwell You may not dance or wear shorts on the main avenue. Cranford Citizens are not permitted to park their own boat on their lawn. Cresskill All cats must wear three bells to warn birds of their whereabouts. Elizabeth It is forbidden for a woman, on a Sunday, to walk down Broad Street without wearing a petticoat. Manville It is illegal to offer whiskey or cigarettes to animals a the local zoo. Newark It is illegal to sell ice cream after 6pm, unless the customer has a note from his doctor. Ocean City People may not slurp their soup. Pinball machines are not to be played on Sunday. Raw hamburger may not be sold. Raritan Profanity is prohibited. Sea Isle City There will be no boiling of bones on the property. Trenton You may not throw a bad pickle in the street. Pickles are not to be consumed on Sundays. Leave a Comment

Always smile. Have you ever heard the saying 'Kill em with kindness'? NJ is not always the most friendly place in the world but a smile goes along way. Leave a Comment

If you're Italian or a lover of Italian things, you obviously know what a granita is. When Italians imigrated to the US, especially the Northeast, they brought their traditional foods and culture. These foods have been Americanized over the last century or so, sometimes to the extent that a real Italian would not recognize the item. Granitas are one of these objects. In South Jersey and Philly, they are called water ices but in North Jersey, they are italian ices. Basically, cremated ice, sugar and hopefully, fresh fruit. Many of the commercial italian ices are made with artificial flavors and corn syrup and aren't worth the money they charge for them. A true italian ice is those 3 ingredients. Look or ask for the local italian ice stands which are often found in neighborhoods with a strong Italian-American presence like DiCosmos Italian Ice in Elizabeth, NJ in the Peterstown section. If in a bind, Ritas Italian Ice will certainly do. This is a commercial chain but their italian ice is quite good. Bits of fruit help make it feel a little homemade. Nothing beats a hot summer day and a cup of italian ice dripping down your hand! Leave a Comment

In New Jersey you're allowed to openly consume beer on the trains. So don't be surprised if your fellow passanger wips out a cold one and cracks it open. You can have one too. Leave a Comment

One mistake we made was thinking there would be a "supermarket" around every corner.....not so here! They have small convenient shops. If you are thinking of getting a bottle of wine to relax for the night, you will have to go to a liquor warehouse store....they do not sell any form of alcoholic beverages in the convenient stores. People are very different between north and south New Jersey. Beware of these differences in liking different sport teams, regions, and politics. I'm on the Jersey Shore in the south and we dislike any tourists and the northern counties.
