Alba Vineyards: The Dessert of Desset Wines

by KiKitC Written Oct 10, 2006

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

What to buy: The Delaware Dolce dessert wine is incredible and a must buy! It has aromas of pineapple and honey , with a sweetness of tropical fruit combinations. For such complex flavors, it offers a balanced finish.

    This one had me speechless!

    Alba Vineyards: Vintage Port

by KiKitC Written Oct 10, 2006

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

What to buy: The Vintage Port is a rich red with hints of black cherry, vanilla and mocha. It is said to develop a dark cherry jam quality with chocolate overtones when it ages...but I don't see this one lasting in my house!

To describe this wine in one word...WOW. It is sweet but doesn't cling to the palate and is just so tasty.

    Alba Vineyards: Blueberry Wine

by KiKitC Written Oct 10, 2006

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

What to buy: New Jersey is one of the largest producers of blueberries in the US. So, a blueberry wine would be a great example of regional wines. The flavor is strong and sweet, served as a dessert wine or apertif...

    I cook with it too...

    Alba Vineyards: Alba's Apple Wine

by KiKitC Written Oct 10, 2006

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

What to buy: Alba's Apple Wine is made from local apple ciders, and offers a semi-sweet, fruity dessert wine. It will make a great mulled wine, but I found it to be delicious in a reduction sauce with pork...

    Alba Vineyards: I'm Blushing...

by KiKitC Written Oct 10, 2006

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

What to buy: Alba Vineyards puts out a wonderful blush called "Barnegat Blush". This was the first blush produced in New Jersey in 1984. It is clean, not too sweet, with strawberry and peach overtones. It drinks really well, and makes good cookin' too.

Alba Vineyards: Rich, full bodied Red

by KiKitC Written Oct 10, 2006

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

What to buy: The Chambourcin is quickly becoming one of my favorite reds. It is medium to full bodied with overtones of cherry, black currant and cedar. It is very pleasing to the taste and smooth.

Serve this with full flavored foods for an added kick!

The other night, I cut some chicken into pieces, floured them and cooked them with onions and garlic in the Chamourcin. I let it reduce down and then added some chicken stock and let it reduce again. The chicken cooked perfectly, and the wine created a rich sauce that was fantastic over rice...

What to buy: As cool as the name sounds, the wine matches...

This white is clean, with floral aromas and fruity overtones. It pairs well with ALOT of different courses. Tonight, actually, I used it as a reduction with shallots and mascarpone cheese with shrimp over pasta...wow!

Alba Vineyards: A clean, crisp Red!

by KiKitC Written Oct 10, 2006

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

What to buy: Surprise! We made it past the whites and into the reds. Now I was treading on thin ice, because there have been few red wines that Gordie would even taste. We started with a Pinot Nior...a medium bodied red with an aroma of cherries, berries and spice, but also has overtones of a toasted nut from it's aging. It was complex and tasty, but didn't paint my tongue and stand around. I couldn't leave without a half case.

And to my surprise, Gordie volunteered that he liked it...

I haven't cooked with it yet, I will let you know how well it does on the range...
This wine is supposed to pair with red meats as well as fish and pasta.

    Alba Vineyards: Barrel Reserve Chardonnay

by KiKitC Written Oct 10, 2006

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

What to buy: Extra time in the oak barrels help give the Barrel Resrve Chardonnay a complex, smooth and creamy taste. I have already used this wine in cooking, and am particullary pleased with the complexity of flavor without overpowering.

This is a nice wine to drink, cook with and offer to friends...share the love.

    Alba Vineyards: Crisp Clean White

by KiKitC Updated Oct 10, 2006

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

What to buy: The Chardonnay was a crisp, clean yet fruity white with overtones of vanilla and nut. It was very pleasing and drank well. I didn't fit this one into my cases going home, because I chose the Barrel Reserve instead...but that's another tip...

Alba Vineyards: A Classic White Wine

by KiKitC Written Oct 10, 2006

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

What to buy: We also tried the Riesling. This is a semi-dry, slightly sweet white wine with overtones of tropical fruit, pineapple. This wine drank really smooth and did not linger on the palate. It's wonderful and versatile. I purchased a handful of bottles...

I did use the Riesling with hot Italian sausage and parmesan wine sauce over pasta that was to die for...

    Alba Vineyards: Dry Riesling

by KiKitC Written Oct 10, 2006

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

What to buy: Another white we tried was a Dry Riesling. The Riesling grape is considred one of "the world's greatest grapes." This wine had a strong aroma and complex taste. It was sweet, but not overpowering. It pairs well with fish and pasta. I immediately thought of pairing it with an onion sauce over pasta, but I didn't buy this one on this trip, because I was already buying more wine in this trip than I have my whole life...combined...

    Alba Vineyards: What a White

by KiKitC Updated Oct 10, 2006

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

What to buy: The wine that convinced me to drive all that way was a white called "Mainsail White." It is just a classic white, not to dry, not too sweet. It is the perfect compliment with almost anything. Not only is it easy to drink, it cooks really well. I've used it very successfully with fish, shrimp, pork, veal, chicken and pasta.

This is a versatile, tasty white wine that fits into every budget and almost every menu. We brought home a half case of this wine.
