Millville Things to Do

  • Millville Army Airfield Museum

The Millville Airport claims the honor of being the first in a chain of defense air fields around the time of WW II. This museum commemorates the airports role in the defense of our country as well as other important periods in aviation history. It is a small museum packed full of items of interest. Anyone who finds the war or aviation interesting...

South Jersey has a long history of manufacturing glass. Wheaton's is a world-renown glass company that was (little known fact) cofounded by Wheaton, my great-great grandfather, and several other men. Wheaton, a shrewd business man, managed to connnive the his partners out of business for, and 'the rest is history...' The Wheaton family got filthy...

  • Warm weather activities

Make sure you find out what's going on in Millville, particularly during the warm weather months. From May until September, there are tons of outdoor activities going on, many of which are sponsored by the Millville Recreation Department and the Riverfront Renaissance Center for the Arts. In addition to published calendars, you can also find...

  • Third Fridays

Millville has borrowed the tradition of "third Fridays" from Philadelphia, where art galleries and other shops on High Street stay open late every third Friday and have a free open house. I always have a fantastic time. It reminds me of European tradition of the evening stroll. We visit the jam packed pub and have a beer. We hop from gallery to...

The Riverfront Renaissance Center for the Arts is at the heart of the arts district in Millville. The Center is the starting point for everything in the arts in the area. They have all the info on what is going on. The nicest and most upscale gallery is located in the Center. They have great art shows all the time. In the hallway joining the two...

  • Amethyst Gallery & Tawes Studio

The first time I met Dennis Tawes was in the very beginning of this whole Arts District Project. He was the very first person to leave his old life behind him and step out on a limb and come to Millville to be a part of the Millville redevelopment project. I stopped in the first gallery he had and chatted with him for a while-- nice guy. But I...

  • Cumberland County Fair

Take a long drive through Millville down Carmel Road out into the middle of nowhere and you'll end up at the Cumberland County Fairgrouds. They have lots of events there throughout the year (including the Pumpkin Festival.) But by far the best event of the year is the County Fair. Children and adults love this event. Of course there's rides, food...

  • Millville Airport & Airshow

Millville Airport claims to be America's first defense airport. It's a place many locals are very proud of. It's a small airport on the fringes of town where many locals take affordable flying lessons or house their small planes. The big draw to the airport is the yearly Wheels and Wings Airshow. Tens of thousands of people flood into Millville for...

  • Fantastic Lunch Spot

I've actually listed the Oar House twice in my tips because during the day and at night the ambiance is different. During the day the Oar House is a super place to grab a bite to eat. The service is great and the food is well prepared. The food is pretty typical American Bar food- jalepeno poppers, buffalo chicken tenders, salads, burgers,...

  • Chinese & Japanese Cuisine with ambiance

The Peking Tokyo is the ONLY chinese restaurant in South Jersey that has any semblance of class, so in my book they get points for that. It's also one of the few restaurants in the area that has been reviewed by the Philadelphia foodies and got decent reviews. The service is impeccible and it's one of the few places that stays open until 11:00pm....

Great decor and superb food and service. Around for just over two years, Winfield's is a welcomed addition to the Cumberland County dining scene, which in the past, has left a lot to be desired. • Artsy cafe and coffee bar

The Looking Glass cafe was one of the first cool places that sprung up in Millville. It's the perfect trendy, artsy coffeehouse that most people wish they had in their town (nah nah!) We don't need Starbucks because we have the real thing. The Looking Glass has a great relaxing vibe with cool tunes, art books, travel & wine magazines and original...

  • Upscale Dining

I've never eaten at Winfield's because I can't afford it, so I can't offer anything insightful. The decor of Winfield's is very metro-artsy, cold and not too inviting. One word... pretentious. I hate snooty. If you are the type of person that likes to schmooze, this is your place. This where are the folks who have too much money go to eat. I've...

The Port of Call is a place where good American food is served in a casual setting and everyone in the family will find something they like. • Awesome Pizza

I am very descriminating about pizza. Trust me, this is a good as it gets. It's made in the South Philly style that I love so much. Big floppy slices of pizza that are greasy and delicious. Lots of other tasty morsels on the menu also. The stromboli is quite good. Recently I tried their white pizza with plain tomato and mozerella and I liked it a...

  • Italian family restaurant

Amato's recently moved into a new facility and it's a big improvement. There's two rooms for booth seating, so the place is more of a restaurant and less of a take-out place now. It's a really typical American-Italian place that sells mediocre pasta and pizza, where you'll be served by some nice American kids who would rather be doing something...

  • A Rare Jewel

Old Oar House is a nice pub located downtown Millville. It is a lovely old restored building with tin ceilings, and a gorgeous old fashioned hardwood bar. Millville Warnings and Dangers

by asturnut Written Jan 29, 2005

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Even though downtown Millville has experienced a renaissance, the area surrounding the arts district (called the 3rd ward) still has major problems. Millville used to have a lot of glass factories and when those places started going out of business the neighborhoods downtown collapsed and left a lot of people without jobs and very disenfranchised. Although the Millvilel Police do a good job of keeping High Street safe, the surrounding areas are not. Crime- including assault, robbery, drugs and prostitution are all a problem in the immediate vicinity of the arts district. Be mindful of where you park and stay aware of yourself and your belongings.

Favorite thing: I love some of the old homes downtown. A few of them have been, or are in the process of being renovated and restored. Unfortunately, as in the case of many old homes they have been ravaged by time, subdivided, or worse yet, threatened with demolition. We still have many lovely homes around the area of High and Main Streets.
