Egan & Sons: Irish Bar a few blocks from Downtown

by marca Updated Apr 4, 2011

Read review of this place in the Star-Ledger and decided to have dinner here before a concert at the Wellmont. We arrived at 6:00 on a Saturday night and were seated in the back(our choice) The place filled shortly afterward leaving others to wait in a line to be seated. This must be the only Irish bar on the Planet that has no Guinness signs or posters on the walls! Instead they have Picaso like paintings from Irish artists. I decided on the Chicked Pot Pie and my wife had a Lambburger with Blue Cheese. The chicken pot pie had a flaky chrust just like it should and contained large chuncks of white meat chicken. Very Good! My wife enjoyed her burger with Cream of Asparagus soup. The service was rather slow however. I would of liked another pint but was not asked until we had finished our meals and were ready to go.

CAFE ECLECTIC: yummy coffee in a perfect atmosphere

by kazander Updated Apr 4, 2011

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

    Cafe Eclectic

Cafe Eclectic is a perfect little coffehouse with a "shabby chic" decor. They have loosely themed the restaurant along the lines of a medieval castle, but not so much that it is obtrusive. The smoking section is the place to sit. Even if you don't smoke, you should try to deal with it because it is just so much better than non. The non smoking section is a little room with little wooden tables and chairs. Smoking however, is a large open space with good ventilation and best of all tons of couches and chairs in a vintage,"grandma's basement" sort of style.

I included their website but the pictures on it really don't do it justice.

Favorite Dish: They have great food, as well as great coffee. My favorite is the Chicken and Brie wrap with pistachios and cranberries. I have forgotten the name of the coffee I always get but it's the one that has the white chocolate/raspberry flavor .

Mexicali Rose: Great Place for Mexican

by kazander Updated Dec 8, 2004

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

    mexicali rose birthday

Enjoyable mexican food in a great atmoshpere. The slightly cramped, crowded, wildly decorated with "mexican" paraphenalia set of rooms is the perfect setting to get together with a bunch of friends for dinner. They do not serve alcohol, so you must bring your own, however, there is a liquor store conveniently located across the street. Bring your own Tequila, and they will whip you up a batch of some wonderful margaritas.
If it's your birthday and someone spills the beans to the staff, look out! The servers all come out of nowhere singing loudly, while crowning you with a large, straw sombrero, serving you dessert and taking a polaroid picture of you. It's part fun, part huge embarrassment!

The Bread Co: The Bread Co

    by feline01 Written Aug 13, 2003

This is a small bakery serving organic, fresh-baked goods that are fantastic. The staff is extremely helpful. There are a few tables outside so it is possible to grab a fresh-baked pizza and an organic juice and watch traffic. The best thing about this place is the abundance of vegan treats from vegan pizza topped with grilled onions and tofu to chocolate bread made with fine belgium dark chocolate.

Favorite Dish: Chocolate bread, of course. The linzer cookies are great as well, whole-grain cookies with a jam center and the chocolate chip cookies still feel somewhat healthy with their emphasis on oats instead of flour. The breads are delicious as well if you're a carbohydrate addict like me.

Soda Pop Shop: Soda Pop Shop

    by feline01 Written Oct 4, 2002

If you're a child of the 1960's-70's, this place is it. Has all sorts of nostalgia along the walls including classic board games. Stars from the 60's-80's appear at the place. All those really famous ones like Soupy Sales, the 2 women from the TV show, Secret Garden, Monkees etc..What kitsch!

Favorite Dish: Veggie burgers are fantastic here. It's more of an ice cream place but can't tell you about that since I don't eat it anymore.

    There are many, many good...

    by feline01 Written Oct 4, 2002

There are many, many good restaurants all located in a 4-5 block area. Walk around and pick your choice of cuisine and price. Check out Bloomfield Avenue from Seymour Street to Valley Road and also Church Street.
