NJPAC - The New Jersey Performing Arts Center

NJPAC (the New Jersey Performing Arts Center) is a large concert hall that was built during the 1990s as part of the ongoing efforts to revive Newark's downtown area. NJPAC hosts a variety of concerts and other performances throughout the year. There is a parking garage located across the street for people driving in from the suburbs.

NJPAC is only the newest, but not the only performing arts center in town. Down Broad Street near Lincoln Park is the old Symphony Hall, a 2,800 seat concert hall whose stage has been graced by such performers as the Temptations, Victor Borge, Richard Pryor and Queen Latifah. Definitely worth a visit. If you're going to be in town check the website to find out about shows.

Nightlife in Newark consists of Theater, clubs, sports, and a select few restaurants. The best none Portuguese nightclubs are on or off Mulberry Street. There is one on Clay Street in the North Ward as well. Theater generally revolves around the NJPAC, Newark Symphony Hall, and PSE&G Plaza's summer night amphitheater events. Restaurants include Maize (in the Robert Treat Hotel), Arthur's (across from PSE&G Plaza) and Theater Square Grill (in NJPAC) on the high end, Euphoria Cafe and some bars in the middle and low ends. Ferry Street has its own unique night life revolving around its Portuguese and Brazilian populace. There are Newark Bears games (Atlantic League--unaffiliated minor league) and the nearby Meadowlands provide Devils (NHL hockey), Nets (NBA basketball), MetroStars (MLS soccer), Jets and Giants (NFL football) among other things.

    New Jersey Performing Arts Center:
    Absolut Sounds of the City
    Thursday Nights during the Summer
On the lawn in front of the NJPAC
Every type of modern music being played by live local bands and even some imports. Brazilian, Hispanic, Rap, Jazz, and more. There is a great singles scene and it is simply fun to see the rainbow of people dancing and listening to the music in the shadow of Newark's latest and greatest landmark.
