Hoboken: Perfect in the summer

  • Hoboken is a town right across the river from New York City. It's a great place to hang out especially in the summer! It's not a terribly big town, only 1 square mile. There are so many restaurants and bars in close proximity to one another that you can hop from one to another all night long if you so choose. The scene is varied, but it is definately got a large amount of younger people. The main drag, Washington Street, is where most of the action is, but we have found a lot of cool places in the backstreets as well.
A great place to hear music is Maxwell's. You would be better off to book tickets in advance, a lot of good bands play here. This is where Yo La Tengo got it's start!
Another cool thing is in the summer they have free movie nights in the park next to the river. Bring a lawn chair or a blanket and enjoy!

Really no dress code, but then again it depends on where you want to get into. Most people are dressed up at least a little...how else are you going to pick anyone up?;)

Medieval Times: A "knight" to remember...

A popular place, especially for the kiddies, is Medieval Times in Lyndhurst , NJ. It gives a new meaning to "dinner and a show". A large round theater with seats divided into colored kingdoms surrounds an open area where knights and horses perform jousting and other games for your pleasure. The color you sit in dictates which knight you root for. For instance, we sat in the green section so we cheered for the green knight and his allies, the blue knight and the red and yellow knight.
Dinner is to be eaten with your hands, no utensils are provided or allowed really. If you are caught using them a spotlight is put on you and you are jeered in front of the whole arena! Vegetable soup, a half chicken, potato and rib are served with dessert following. Not to worry, a warm towel is provided for cleaning up after this messy meal. Vegetarian meals can also be provided if you choose.

    Adults: $47.95

We visited this wonderful little theatre with friends whose son is an actor. His friend starred in Hamlet, so we all showed up to support his effort. It was a fun theatre and a terrific performance.
The castle was originally a Jewish Community Ctr. then sold to become a Knights of Columbus Hall and finally transformed to become a castle theatre!! The architect won an award for the transformation.

If you love to dance, or watch others move, find your spot at the Casbah. I loved the atmosphere, loved the people, loved the music, loved the dancing. Wherever you may stand inside the club, you will surely notice the dancers, 3 or 4 come out at one time and work it on their "dance" stage for 30 minutes. I am a big fan of music and moving, these people are pro's, addicting to watch, especially the blond, blue eyes bombshell, she stole the heart of everyman in the room. That moment I wish I was her.

    Loew's Movie Theatre: Movies, anyone?

Straightaway on Deb and Savannah's return, we were off to Loew's Movie Theatre to see "Man on the Moon". Because Deb and Savannah had already taken lunch, J.D. and I stopped at the Burger King. I took chicken fingers because the folks at these fast-food restaurants aren't paid enough to care if they mess up your order (putting mayonnaise on your hamburger when you specifically ask for it to be plain) and it is hard to mess up chicken fingers. J.D. took a double bacon and cheese hamburger and I got Savannah a Pokémon toy (I'm still not certain as to why Pokémon has become so popular). On arriving to the movie house, Deb ordered something from a coupon that included popcorn and a soft drink. That "complicated" order clearly bumfuzzled this young lady behind the counter who is so dumb that if she threw herself at the ground she would miss. I thought "Man on the Moon" was a tribute to the Apollo 11 astronauts given that 1999 was the 30th anniversary of the landing on the moon. The space programme always has fascinated me. Instead, it was about a comedian named Andy Kaufman who was as crazy as an out house rat and who died young. Although I didn't like the movie much because of its sad ending, I appreciate J.D. taking me to it.

Come as you are (within reason).

  • Here's a fun place! You can eat , drink , and dance. Be sure to catch the Bubba Mac Blues Band on Saturday nights. Menu features seafood, beef as well as vegetarian food.

Update: To date the shack has closed indefinitely.

You're at the shore! Casual dress, by all means.

94th Bomb Group: Drinks on the runway

  • We heard about this place from friends of ours who had been here for happy hour. We all decided to head down here for drinks on a Saturday night....little did we know it was singles night! There were drinks and dancing and food and lots of folks lookin for love. As you may know I have just gotten married. So our group consisted of one married couple, one engaged couple , and my dear friend who might as well be married (they have been dating for like 10 years...they could legally be married....anyway) We are not exactly swinging singles, but we had a fantastic time! The drinks were unbelievably inexpensive. 5 drinks was just over $20, these were mixed drinks, not just beer. We danced to the cheesey music, sat around a firepit on the patio and watched the planes land. (The whole place is a WWII theme, the planes add to the ambiance) Closing time was early, the place turns into a pumpkin at midnight.

I think they are pretty lenient, you might want to dress it up a little if you go for singles night.

Malonies is really 4 bars in one all connected all have there own personality.

'The Zoo' DJ Kenny Sloan spinning his favorites from th 70's- Modern. Sweet Caroline has been played there every day since Kenny started 14 years ago. Crowded on Saturday. Everyone sings along. George and Dazer tending bar.

'The Patio' Outback, outside, frozen drinks, great food.

'Downstairs' Next to Zoo, thru hallway. Techno and good pints on tap. Strange combo. Try Pop Pop's Irish Coffee with whipped cream.

'Upstairs' DJ Sparkles spins a web of diverse songs from Abba to the Verve. Mostly Indie and Modern. Torker and Fun Johnie sharing bar duties. The dance floor filled with dancin fools and on good days, so are the tables

You must have clothes on during normal business hours.
