Warnings in Paterson
The Alabama Housing Projects near South Paterson are one of the roughest housing projects in the state. Police battle with drugs, prostitution, and violence…even during the daytime. Wrigley Park or the Fourth Ward along Martin Luther King Blvd. is also crime infested but not as bad as the Alabama Housing Projects. However, there are still great swaths of vacant lots, boarded up windows, and open air drug markets.
Security in Paterson
Some parts of Paterson are rougher than others. The worst part is the northeastern part, where both the avenues and streets are numbered. Drug Dealers operate on the side streets even in the middle of the day. Other rough areas are the northern part and many areas right off Main Street. Main STreet is safe during the day, but be careful of some of the areas away from Main Strreet, especially the side streets. Another bad area can be found off on MLK Boulevard off Main Street. The Waterfall is safe to visit, and some areas by West Paterson are also pretty safe, such as the neighborhood known as Hillcrest. Also, there are some nice places by Route 4 in the Southern Part of Paterson.
Fire, flood and tornado
Paterson certainly wasn't the place to be 100 years ago, when it was hit by three disasters inside 18 months. At the beginning of February 1902 the Great Fire of Paterson raged for 24 hours and destroyed 459 buildings. Three weeks later the Passaic river broke its banks and flooded what was left of the city. And then in June 1903, when rebuilding work was well under way, a tornado ripped through the centre of Paterson.
