Every year, in early December, Ridgewood holds its annual Christmas Tree lighting ceremony downtown in Van Neste Square, where the town decorates a large evergreen tree with thousands of lights. In addition to lighting the tree, the evening also features music and entertaiment for the kids. Hundreds of people usually come, so you need to get there early to get a good parking place.
The 4th of July (American Independence Day) is a big holiday in Ridgewood. Our town has a parade in the morning, which lasts about 2 hours, and a large fireworks display in the evening.
If there was ever a fire in Bergen County on the morning of July 4th, it would be a problem, since many of the county's fire trucks are in our town's parade! In addition to fire trucks, the parade also features marching bands, former soldiers, marchers from various community organizations (churches, scouts, etc.), Shriners, clowns, antique cars, and floats made by students from each of the town's six elementary schools.
Ridgewood's fireworks display is one of the best in New Jersey, lasting over 30 minutes. The fireworks are shot off from Veterans' Field, next to the town hall, beginning around 9:15.
