A fun way to spend a hot summer day (we played hookie from work!) Mountain Creek, formerly called Action Park, has tons of waterslides, rafting rides, cliff diving, a wave pool and my personal favorite "High Anxiety", a tube rides that washes you through an enormous funnel and spits you out into a pool. There are lockers for your stuff and some changing rooms so you don't have to drive home all soggy. There are also a bunch of places to grab a snack. Definately hop onto their website before you go. You can get great discounts. Two tickets for the price of one! If you can go on a weekday, it's far less crowded so the lines aren't really long at all. Perfect for going on a ride more than once!

Bring a swimsuit and maybe a towel. Everything else is provided

    Snowtubing at Campgaw!

  • Campgaw Mountain is a little ski area with some killer snowtubing!
Campgaw is great for beginners. It's a very small mountain with only 2 "trails" so to speak. They give lesons not only for skiing, but for snowboarding as well. Here is where I had my 1st ski experience, I was awful! I never thought I would ever be able to ski (I did learn eventually)
The Tubing on the other hand takes no skill whatsoever! Lou and I went a couple years ago and had a blast! The tubing trails are fulls of bumps and jumps as you slide your way down the very large hill. When you're done, grab your tube, hook it to the automatic pull, and hike your way back up to do it all over again! You pay $14 for 2 hours of unlimmited tubing.

    Monday - Thursday 2pm - 8pm
    Friday 1pm - 10pM
    Weekend & Holiday 9am - 10pm*
    *8pm closing on Sunday

    Tubing Sessions
    Monday-Thursday: 4-6pm, 6-8pm
    Friday: 2-4pm, 4-6pm, 6-8pm, 8-10pm
    Weekend and Holiday: 10am-12pm, 12-2pm, 2-4pm, 4-6pm, 6-8pm, 8-10pm*

    *Saturday only

    $cbTube is provided.
If you're skiing, rental is available, otherwise bring your own!

    Roosevelt Park

Metuchen's Roosevelt Park is a great place for families, couples, joggers, bikers and anyone who likes the great outdoors in the New York suburbs of northern New Jersey. The park has two sections. In the first, there is an ampitheatre where they do excellent family productions such as Peter Pan, Pinocchio, and the like. There are also some basketball courts where you can jump in on a pickup game on Saturday mornings. The area has a lot of greenery, and some parts are wooded. Warning and danger: Don't stray too far from the beaten path because you are likely to run into a few ticks and Lyme disease is common in this part of the world. In the second section, there is a children's playground, tennis courts, and a pond where folks enjoy feeding the ducks and some fish even though it's frowned upon. There is also a kiosk where one can buy refreshments such as soft drinks, hot dogs, pretzels, Italian ices (chocolate, blue raspberry, and tutti fruity flavours). For those who like to cook, there are public grills throughout the park. Come on over, run, play, feed the ducks, have a picnic, watch the kids play (or folks in general), but please tidy up before you go.

  • Giants Stadium - New Jersey
    Giants Stadium
    by b1bob
Ironically, both of New York's NFL football teams (the Giants and Jets) play at the Meadowlands Sports Complex in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Before this bit of irony, the Giants used to play at New York's Yankee stadium and the Jets played at Shea Stadium, also home to baseball's New York Mets. In 1987, after the Giants won the Super Bowl, there was controversy on why the mayor (then Ed Koch) did not have a ticker tape parade for the victorious Giants. He pointed out, with some reason, that the Giants play in New Jersey and are, therefore, a New Jersey team.

The New Jersey Nets are one team the state can call its own. The Nets are a basketball team and the Devils are an NHL hockey team. At least in terms of sport franchises, New Jersey is asserting itself over the two large cities just outside its borders.

    Skiing in New Jersey

  • We get a lot of snow here (especially this past winter!) If you are in NJ in the winter I would recommend skiing at Hidden Valley. It is not as well known as Vernon Valley, but I prefer it. Shorter lift lines and less crowded. Vernon Valley is not worth it to me because I like to get a lot of runs in for the price of my lift ticket!!

Try to ski during the week--it's cheaper and less crowded.

You can rent ski or snowboarding equipment.

  • What a Beauty! - New Jersey
    What a Beauty!
    by nicolettart
If you are in the Shore area, nearby Howell has many horse farms, and you can go horseback riding. I went to Circle A where a guide takes you through beautiful Allaire State Park. You get a crash course in commands and off you go! It's really a lot of fun and no experience is necessary. There are many stables, you will notice them as you drive throught the back roads and see the beautiful horses. I see them on my drive to work everyday. It's really an unconventional commute in New Jersey, where most commuters are on the Parkway or the Turnpike in the morning!
P.S. The best time of year would probably be spring or fall--avoid the heat of the summer as it can really stress out a horse!

None needed, but wear long pants for Pete's sake! It may be buggy depending on the time of year, so wear bug guard.

It will probably cost around $23/person for an and hour and a half ride.

  • Long ago, canoeing was an important means of transportation for the tribes that inhabited New Jersey. If you are in the mood for some real peace and quiet, take a canoe out into the Pine Barrens. The Wading River is especially peaceful and you don't need any experience. Many places will rent you a canoe. I personally prefer a kayak as they are less likely to tip and I like being level to the water.

I recommend the book "Exploring the Little Rivers of New Jersey" by James and Margaret Cawley. It's a wonderful guide to the rivers with maps: great reference book.

a boat, life vests, bug spray, bottled water and lunch, of course!

  • The Meadowlands sports complex is comprised of a football stadium that is shared by the New York Jets and New York Giants football teams and the Metrostars soccer team, an arena that is shared by the New Jersey Nets basketball team and the New Jersey Devils hockey team, and a horse racing track that features races with both thoroughbreds and trotters.
