A public restroom has been known as the "Comfort Station" for as long as anyone can remember. Located near the bottom of the landmark water tower on 2nd Avenue between 95 - 96th Street. Behind the beautiful Italian Renaisance style waterworks buiding.
They used to bang on a big metal ring to summon the volenteer fire department. Then, when they changed to an air raid siren, they tested it at noon time every day but Sunday. The tradition carries on. You can hear it on the beach - time for lunch.
