A Victorian gingerbread! by VeronicaG Cape May is a picturesque little town lined with Victorian houses and buildings. This is our favorite place to visit in New Jersey and we have visited here countless times and seasons. See my CAPE MAY travel page for more photos. It is located at the Southern most point of New Jersey, where the Garden Parkway ends. Many themed events like Victorian Week, Sherlock Holmes Weekend, Jazz Festival, Wine Tasting and House Tours are regularly scheduled throughout the year. Superb restaurants, lovely tree-lined streets and assorted shops all call to those who travel there. It is a destination that holds the interest of travelers young and old. If you are interested in Cape May, see my travel page on this pretty town. It is mentioned in the book 1000 PLACES TO SEE BEFORE YOU DIE by Patricia Schultz.

Long Beach Island is an 18 mile long barrier island off the coast of New Jersey. It is known for its white beaches and resort towns like Beach Haven. Having been transplanted from Pennsylvania to New Jersey seven years ago, I found that many New Jersey families actually vacation in New Jersey!! For example, Long Beach Island. It is a very pricey, but beautiful island. Visit the water park, beach and shopping areas. Summer rentals can be made on the bay side or the ocean side. Parts of Long Beach Island tend to flood if heavy rains influenced by hurricanes come this way, so we were advised to rent on the North end of the island where departure is easier if necessary. Address: off the coast of New JerseyDirections: Take the Garden Street Expressway South to Exit 63. Go towards CAMDEN/LONG BEACH ISLAND then take NJ 72E./LONG BEACH BLVD. to w40TH.Website: www.longbeachisland.com

Twin Lights is a popular destination, plus the view is spectacular from the heights. The Lighthouse is located in Highlands, New Jersey and overlooks the shore of Sandy Hook State Park. It was built in 1862, replacing an earlier structure from 1828 and stands over 200 feet. Twin Lights was the first to be equipped with a fresnel lens--made up of complex prisms that produced a light superior to others. There are 64 steps to the top, the last few being very narrow. The lighthouse was decomissioned in 1949. Hours are daily from 10-5 pm Memorial Day-Labor Day. The remaining months of the year are open Wed-Sun. There is no admission fee charged. My photo cropped off one end of the lighthouse where the second light was. Photo #2 shows the other light.

Our favorite beach is Avon-by-the-Sea located in Central New Jersey in Monmouth County. It's not just because I like to say Avon-by-the-Sea, but it is a wonderful little beach in a town of lovely Victorian homes. The beach tags for the summer are $70; children under 11 are free. Guarded beaches are opened weekends only May 29-June 20; beaches officially open daily from June 21 thru September 6. Floats and picnics are permitted; snackbar and restrooms are available. Families will appreciate the children's playground on the beach! Avon has free on-street parking. Have dinner at The Columns and dine on the winding veranda of this Victorian home at 601 Ocean Avenue (732-988-3213). It's open from Memorial-Labor Day and is across the street from the boardwalk. Avon Pavilion is a boardwalk restaurant that is a great place to enjoy breakfast at 600 Ocean Avenue. If you come this early, it will be easier to find a parking spot! Hungry people line up at this restaurant for lunch and dinner, too. Country By The Sea Tearoom and Gift Shop is a pretty little place carrying seaside souvenirs, delicate collector pieces, antiques and home accessories. The tearoom has only a few tables set to one side of the shop, but offers tasty tidbits for your afternoon tea at 515 Sylvania Avenue (732-776-6671--call for reservations). Tea brings you home-baked goodies, tea sandwiches, desserts, coffee or herbal and fruited teas.

Sandy Hook Lighthouse by kazander The Gateway National Recreation area on Sandy Hook is home to the oldest working lighthouse in the United States. Built in 1764, it's been working continuously from that time. The only exceptions being times of War. We were told by a local that the lighthouse had originally been on the end of the "hook" but after 200 years plus, the ocean had receded a bit , placing the lighthouse in the center. Tours are given on the weekends throughout the spring, summer and fall. Just over the bridge off of Sandy Hook, you will find a more unusual lighthouse. Twin Lights looks more like a castle than a lighthouse. Only the South tower is still in operation. The grounds, museum and tower are open for touring. Free to get in. Leave a Comment

Jersey Shore by kazander The Jersey Shore is definately worth a trip. My favorite spots are Spring Lake(see travelogue for pix), it's nearby neighbor, Point Pleasant (not to far, good boardwalk) and Wildwood (Very Far, Great boardwalk!) There is also a nude beach at Sandy Hook (Never been, but I know someone who has!) Sandy Hook also is part of the Gateway National Recreation area, so if you prefer a quieter beach experience without any boardwalk, this might be the place for you. Most of the Jersey Shore has wide expanses of white sand for you to plunk your blanket and umbrella. A few of them are free to get into but mostly there is a day charge or a week, month or season pass you can buy. Some of the hotels provide badges with check in. (This is all depending on which beach you go to) So go, enjoy the sand & surf, the rides, and the funnel cakes and fresh lemonade, yes in that order;) Leave a Comment Directions: take the NJ Parkway south, pick an exit lower than 117 and head East, you can't miss it!

Red Bank is a very popular town in Central New Jersey. The shops are fairly pricey, the restaurants are filled to the rafters on weekends and many events such as the George Sheehan race bring runners of all abilities to the area. Cruisin' With The Oldies Weekend and the Jazz Festival draw people to Marine Wharf for entertainment and fun! In addition, there is usually an assortment of carnivals and street fairs over the summer. Street musicians ply their talents on Saturday evenings in the summer time. My husband and I tried to visit as often as possible to enjoy this opportunity! Several restaurants open their sidewalk seating in the summer, so it's possible to sip a glass of wine and feast on a romantic dinner while listening to live music.

Montclair Art Museum by kazander Finally we made it over to the Montclair Art Museum! A small museum that is known for it's collection of Native American artwork, they also have special exhibitions, a very interesting permanant collection and a recent acquisitions gallery that showcases the museums newest works. When we visited, the special exhibtion was of the work of Jan Matulka: The Global Modernist. Two large rooms are devoted to his work, with text eplaning the evolution of the artists work. It was very interesting. We will definately be returning to see the next special exhibtion. We found the museum to be a wonderful place to view art, and we didn't even have to go into Manhattan!:) The museum has a great little gift shop you should pop into as well. We got some wonderful holiday cards!!! Museum Hours: 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday. Closed Mondays and major holidays.
