Lou and me in the car by kazander Since I live in New Jersey, I drive everywhere, though I carpool with Lou to work to save gas. I find this the easiest way to get around, certainly for anything off the beaten path it is essential. But if you are just passing through, visiting friends or anything requireing you to get from point a to point b, NJ also has a lot of mass transportation methods to get you there. We have many buses and trains to take you from major cities to little towns. Keep in mind that you may have to take the bus from a little town to a major city to get to another little town. We also have Newark International Airport for flights that will take you anywhere in the world you need to be. Leave a Comment Theme: Car/Motor Home

Waiting for take-off at Gatwick by toonsarah We decided that flying to Newark rather than JFK or La Guardia would make most sense for our combined New York and New Jersey trip, as lying to the south of the city it would be more convenient for driving both too and from our destinations in New Jersey, and it proved to be a good choice. We went with Continental from London Gatwick (although slightly oddly, and conveniently for us, returned to Heathrow). Both flights went smoothly, arriving ahead of schedule on both occasions (something Continental apparently pride themselves on). The service was pleasant, the meals instantly forgettable and the planes modern and reasonably comfortable – and travelling economy we’ve learned not to expect anything more than this! Newark seemed to be a well-organised airport, apart from rather lengthy queues when we checked in for our return flight – the baggage conveyor had broken down which is some excuse for that. A free monorail, the Airtrain, links the three terminals with the station, car rental companies and parking lots, running every four minutes during the day. We found that a very efficient way to get to wherever we needed to be, both on arrival and departure and when we passed through the airport to pick up our hire car at the end of our week in New York.

Our car by toonsarah After a week spent in Manhattan, we rented a car for our week in New Jersey. We picked up the Hertz car, a Ford Fusion, from Newark Liberty Airport, having pre-booked it on a special deal through Expedia (£158 for 8 days all in). The rental office was on the airport and easily reached by the free monorail, the Airtrain, and the whole process was handled very quickly and efficiently so we were soon on our way. We’ve done a lot of driving in the US now but found the roads in the more built-up parts of the state among the most challenging we’ve experienced. Lots of lanes, packed with cars whose drivers all had a much better idea than we did where they were going and were much less courteous (sorry New Jersey-ites!) than those in other parts of the country. Poor sign-posting around the airport and heavy rain the day we drove back to it didn’t help either, and nor did our lack of experience of toll roads (see my Cape May page for more on that). But the quieter roads away from the big conurbations were a pleasure to drive, with some lovely pastoral scenery in the south of the state and a great drive along the banks of the Delaware further north and west. Our car was comfortable and pretty easy to drive, though the handling was a little heavier than we’re used to. We thought it was good value for what we’d paid, and as we were mostly using it for short distances around the Cape May area we didn’t spend too much on petrol (sorry, gas!) either. Within the towns in New Jersey, you will find lot of Enterprise rent a car offices. Although it is not as big as Hertz or Avis wherein you can pick up a car from one office then drop off to a different one. Here, you can only pick up and rop off on the same office where you rent the car. rates differ from seasonality and type of car. Tip: If you're going to rent on a day falling on Friday, you will return the car Monday the following week coz they are closed during weekend. So, Saturday and Sunday will be free of charge. by Cielo_Algaeed During our stay in New Jersey, we used dollar for our car rental needs. Although it was pre arranged about a month ago over the internet through expedia. The car was new and in good running condition as well as the airconditioning unit. We actually picked up the car at theirr JFK airport office and returned to their Newark airport office. Insurance is not included in the quotation that you will get from expdia although it is optional. Taxes and other charges are not included in the rate. Note: Insurance would cost you double the car rental rate.

Riverlink Ferry by tpangelinan This is a great thing to do if your in Camden take the Riverlink Ferry over to Philadelphia Penns Landing for plenty more things to do, museums, boat tour, food, live music and much more! The ferry crosses about every 40 minutes, starts around 10:00am to 5:15pm, check the website below for more information. This is the ferry dock located on the Camden side in back of the aquarium. The ferry does depart about every 40 minutes, but we suggest you get there early because you may stand in line for up to an hour an maybe longer to catch the ferry to Philadelphia. If you have children bring snacks and water if it's a hot day, there isn't really any shade to be had. Adults $6.00 Children 3-12 $5.00 Children under 3 free Group rates available Leave a Comment

Metropark Station by b1bob Last time I came to this part of New Jersey (at the millennium), I was advised by the folks at Amtrak to come and go out of the New Brunswick station. Metropark Station in nearby Iselin, I found out later, took more Amtrak traffic so that I wouldn't have to get up with the chickens the day I left and it was decisively closer to my destination than New Brunswick was. As you can perhaps make out on enlarging the picture, Metropark handles Amtrak as well as NJ Transit commuter traffic. Leave a Comment Theme: Train
