This is an oven used for baking bread. Notice the cactus on the roof of the building on the right....cactus on roof supposedly protects the house from lightning!
Descending from the Mesa Top
A bus takes you from the Visitor Center to the top of the mesa. In order to descend, you can either return on the bus or climb the steep, ancient trail to the valley bottom.
The Acoma Pueblo boasts about 4,400 residents, but only about 50 currently reside year-round on the mesa top.
