White Sands National Monument contains part of a 275 square mile expanse of white Gypsum sand. This is the largest gypsum field in the world. The area offers a glimpse at a unique environment with some unique species of animal and plant life. There are some nice trails you can take to experience this environment including the handicapped accessible Boardwalk Trail. You can also have a picnic, or rent a metaldisk and slide down the dunes. You can hike across the desert off the marked trails but if you do so, make sure you follow the safety guidelines. There is a nice visitors center with some good educational displays and a Nature Center (if it is open).

The Tularosa Basin Historical Society Museum was established in 1964 to collect and preserve the history of the Tularosa Basin and the town of Alamogordo. They have a nice collection of artifacts and printed materials crammed into a too small space. Hours are 10 AM to 4 PM Monday through Saturday, the museum is closed on Sundays. Admission is free.
The first thing you will notice are the exhibits outside. Photo 1 is the exterior of he building; Photo 2 is a Gristmill Burr used for grinding flour; and Photo 3 is the Walk of Honor for the men and women serving in the military; Inside there are quite a number of displays. Photo 4 is a general shot; and Photo 5 shows a rare 47 star flag. These flags are rare becuase New Mexico, the 47th state was followed by Arizona, the 48th state by only 1 1/2 months. Also in Alamogordo is the Alameda Zoo. The Alameda Zoo was established in 1898 and is the oldest zoo in the southwest. It is fairly small so you will not see animals like Elephants and Giraffes here; but it's still a pretty nice zoo. They also have picnic areas and a playground. Hours are 9 AM (except when I was there they did not open the gates until 9:40) to 5 PM daily except Christmas and New Year's Day. Admission fees are $2.50 for adults; $1.50 for seniors and kids 3 to 11; and free for kids 2 and under. Address: 1321 N.
