The big attraction in Alamogordo is the national monument. If you've ever wanted to see big sand dunes and can't afford to travel to the Sahara or the Gobi, you can still see some impressive dunes here. Located just west of Alamogordo past the main gate to Holloman Air Force Base, the NPS does a great job with trail management considering that the dunes are constantly shifting. There is a nice visitor's center and trail markings and exhibits. I would highly recommend taking the 4.5-mile Alkali Flat hike (somewhat strenuous) and also the ranger-led hikes around sunset. Be sure to take lots of water with you as there isn't anywhere to fill up once you're out in the dunes and temps can get up into the 100s during the summer.

  • Within the musuem, one gets a glimpse of type of food taken while in outer space, 'space toilet', & some virtual simulation of what outer space is like. The history of space exploration is also presented in exhibits form to visitors of the museum.

    Mescalero Church
This church is about a 45 minuter drive from Alamoghetto, but interesting to see. Its a cross between catholisim and Apache religions. There is some history behind it but I dont feel like writing that much. We did some landscaping volunteer work to help it look bettter but its gunna take a helluva lot more than jusd pulling weeds.

Miles and Miles of white gypsum sand, make for a fun day of play. You can rent sand boards at the gift shop or fashion one of your own. It's a blast. Just don't go wandering too far, many people have died out there after getting lost.

    White Sands Monument
Dunes of sparkling white sand as far as the eye can see. There are parking areas inside the dune areas, with covered picnic tables and little BBQ grills. My friends and I skipped many days of school in summer filling our trunks with water balloons, and ice chests of soda & steak before heading to the sands to have the best BBQs ever. Bare feet, pretty sand, and a bunch of people in swimsuits getting a tan. Just don't forget your water, and no hanky panky in the dunes... according to a friend the fine for that is about $40 and community service. *not recommended for little kids who can't have a lot of sun!*

This is one of the best things about Southern New Mexico. White Sands is an absolutely gorgeous collection of dry, white dunes spread over several miles, some of which is open to the public as a national monument. The dunes are actually a dry lake bed, Lake Lucero. Coming into Alamogordo from the east or west on Highway 70 gives you a really beautiful view of this lake bed from the mountains forming what used to be the ancient shoreline. What's great about White Sands is that you can just start walking and almost lose yourself on the dunes. There are trails, which are really just a few signs and a collection of footprints, but it's fun sometimes to go off and find your own little corner. White Sands is worth at least a day, and you kids will love it. It also has the benefit of being only about 30 minutes from either Las Cruces or Alamogordo. I prefer staying in Las Cruces, but maybe that's just me. Entry is $10, I believe, which is good for a week.
