Fly into Albuquerque International airport, or if you're from a neighboring state, drive via I-40 or I-25. You definitely need a car to get around, everything is very spread apart. It's like a big suburb. Leave a Comment Theme: Airplane

Planes in Albuquerque (Mark Jochim 4/13/03) by MarkJochim Albuquerque's main airport (officially called the "Sunport") lies just a few miles south of downtown and is adjacent to Kirtland Air Force Base (sharing runways and fire/rescue facilities). There's plenty of parking and the attractive terminal is easy to navigate. A number of places to eat lie both before and after the security checkpoints, providing a wide range of foods but with a Southwestern emphasis. The terminal also includes plenty of artwork and a large collection of model airplanes to look at in addition to a very nice observation lounge. If you have a car and a free afternoon, drive south of the Sunport towards the General Aviation area and you will find an "Airplane Viewing Area" at the end of one of the runways. It's a great place to watch planes take off and land. Leave a Comment Theme: Airplane

There is a wonderful little exhibit of very creative fashions made of recycled items, currently on display. It is on the way out to the parking garage, but it is worth checking out if you are there or waiting. These dresses were shown in the Recycled Fashion Shows during past Recycling Week events in Santa Fe. I think they have traveled and been shown elsewhere also. Theme: Airplane

Car Is Still the Best Way to Get Around the City by JamesABQ Although there are many ways to get to the city, such as airplane, bus and train, getting around the city is a different story. Albuquerque lacks when it comes to public transportation. There are many bike trails throughout the city but travelers would have a hard time finding them. Bus is ok, if you don't mind the wait. Taxi's are also avaliable but you can't flag them down like in larger cities, here you have to call them to come pick you up. They will charge an arm and a leg to take you to your destination, wherever that may be. Light Rail, there are plans to build a Light Rail system but that won't happen until 2006. So the best thing I can recommend for getting around the city is car. At least until something better comes up. Leave a Comment Theme: Car/Motor Home

There ABQ :) by kymbanm New Mexico isn't very good about north/south or east/west on their street signs. You have to know what town or city your are heading towards to get your bearings ... so take a few moments to note the next big town on your route from a map - this will help those of us w/out a compas or GPS stay on the road in the direction we REALLY wish to travel :) Leave a Comment Theme: Car/Motor Home

Alvarado Station by JamesABQ In the center of the city, in downtown, sits the Alvarado Transportation Center. This newly built structure will serve as the hub for transportation in Albuquerque. Here, people will be able to catch the city bus, or perhaps a taxi. Greyhound, wich currently sits across the street from the center, will also move in and operate from there in the future. Amtrak also makes stops here and will have an office in the center when the second phase of the project is built. When Light Rail is up and running in the city, the rail will operate from and make stops at the center. Many bike racks are located here for bike riders to park their bikes while they attend to business in downtown. Built to look like the old Alvarado train station and hotel, the Alvarado Transportaion Center will serve almost all forms of transportation in and out of Albuquerque, New Mexico. I have seen buses, not often, and have never taken them. As with most SW cities--and in most of the U.S.--public transportation is either non-existent or stinks. Leave a Comment Theme: Car/Motor Home

Getting around Albuquerque is a pain in the wallet. For those of you renting a car, they offer affordable rates but taxes are about 24% on rentals! Two different cabbies told me that this is the 'Land of Entrapment' , a spin on New Mexico's motto 'Land of Enchantment' as this is the only US state where entrapment is legal. Since I am without a drivers license, I cabbed it everywhere. Not smart. Cabbies are friendly, but since everything is so wide-spread out here it takes quite the time getting from place to place. $ The locals know the bus system is a tragedy and when I passed it, it was very deserted with inconvient scheduling. The Amtrak/Greyhound Station downtown scared me and I highly recommend an update. There are cute lizards painted on the walls inside to try and uplift the place, but it has much more potential. If you're driving here, great, but pity the soul who needs to get around Albuquerque without a license. Leave a Comment Theme: Other
