Ride the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railway.
Take a step back in history aboard the narrow-gauge, steam engine driven train. Ride through beautiful mountain country over the Continental Divide into Colorado. At mid-point, the train meets up with a train headed to Chama from Antonito, Colorado. Passengers from both trains disembark for an open-air barbecue dinner, included with trip ticket. They then board one of the trains, either returning to their originating station, or riding on to the other end of the line.

    Old Railcars at Chama

by Easty Written Jan 28, 2005

This railroad goes between Chama, New Mexico and Antonito, Colorado through the narrow gorges of the nearby San Juan Mountains. We opted to go on the nearby Durango-Silverton RR instead of this journey. I did see a video on this railroad and it looked very interesting. At the Chama Railroad station, there were some old railcars.

Even if you don't ride the train, it's fun to explore the train yard at Chama. The water tank at the edge of the yard is believed to be the only double-spouted tank still in use. A visit to the roundhouse, coaling tower, and other railroad facilities in Chama is a must.
