Get off the tourist trail and discover what's really going on: There's a local epidemic of heroin use in this area and El Centro Family Health Clinict is reportedly having an 80% rate of success with treating opiate addiction using Suboxone (which contains Narcan, an opiate-overdose antidote, and buprenorphine, a drug that stops opioids such as heroin from attaching to brain receptors) - see http://www.riograndesun.com/articles/2009/08/20/news/county/doc4a8c4ca83a026428124779.txt

Heading north from el Santuario itself and past the Restaurante Performing Arts, you will cross a main traffic street and see the local cemetary. I found the cemetary very interesting because of the elaborate ironwork gates around the plots and all of the decorations. Most graves are covered with bouquets of fake flowers and many are accompanied with statues or small trinkets for the deceased loved ones. Be prepared to get burrs in your socks if you choose to walk through the cemetary.
