You must go camping. The forests of New Mexico are grand places offering refuge from the hot deserts to the south and west, the cold mountains from the north, and the dried-out plains of the east. The Lincoln National Forest is located around Cloudcroft and offers many fine places to camp. The summer is the best time to go as it is relatively mild there. However, during the late summer, around August and early September, the nights can get pretty frigid. Just make sure you have something(or someone) you can warm up with.

when in cloudcroft, you must...
when in cloudcroft, you must visit the town mercantile. It is full of shops that will have something for everybody, no matter what your age. There are antiques, jewelry, toy, clothes, games, food, art, and much more to enjoy.

Other activities to enjoy in cloudcroft are all of the outdoor variety. The town park is very nice, my little cousins always have to spend plenty of time there during vacation. As for me, my favorite activity is golfing. The lodge golf course is a very nice course right in the center of town. It is often crowded though and tee times are hard to come by some times. Another golf course that is in the area is Ponderosa Pines Golf Course. It is hardly ever crowded, and is a fun course to play. It usually is not in quite as good of shape as the lodge but if you are looking for a fun little course to play it is great. One tip about golf and other outdoor activities I wil give you is try to get started doing them early in the afternoon, it often rains in the late afternoons and evenings in the mountains.

Other activities to enjoy are tennis, biking, hiking, and camping. There are two tennis courts to enjoy right in the middle of town. You can rent mountain bikes in town or just bring your own, yher are countless trails. You can also hike the trails and set up camp in any of the numerous parks around town.

My fondest memory of cloudcroft happened a number of years ago. Me and my cousin were about 15 a the time and decided to go and play golf. No one else wanted to go so they just dropped us off and left to go to town and shop. We got out on the course and began to notice some dark clouds moving twards us. However both of us were playing well at the time, I was -1 and he was E for the first 3 holes. That doesn't sound great but those are the most difficult holes on the course, we had a lot of easy holes ahead and didn't want to stop. A light rain began to fall but we pushed on. By the time we got to the 5th tee box we noticed lightning and began to head back to the club house. It was to late however and on the way back the rain was so heavy we had to pull under a tree. That was not a smart move because just a few minutes later lightning struck only a few hundred yards away from us. We were so startled we literally jumped out of the cart. We soon saw a woman waving at us from her house, we both darted to the house were she gave us towels and let us stay until the rain stoped. Our parents showed up soon after and took us home. We got a rain check and came back the next day to finish our rounds. To niether of our surprises we played terrible and wound up shooting in the mid and upper 80's. We always talk about this adventure as our 'CADDY SHACK' experience, referning to the scene in the movie where the preacher is playing the round of his life and gets struck by lighting. This is a memory we will never forget.
